Normoyle Scores Run, Connole Hits RBI Single

SALISBURY, MD - Host Salisbury University, ranked sixth in Division III, pounded out 13 hits en route to a 9-2 win over visiting Washington College in non-conference baseball action on Monday afternoon at the SU Baseball Field. The Sea Gulls improved to 4-1 with the win, while the Shoremen fall to 0-1.

The Shoremen got on the board in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) led off the contest with a single to left field and took second on a wild pitch. The next hitter, freshman Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) singled to left plating Normoyle. Washington had runners and second and third base with one out, but both were left stranded.

Salisbury scored a run in the bottom of the first to tie it up at 1-1. With one away, Mike Celenza doubled down the left field line to plate Tim Kellinger to even the score. The Sea Gulls had two on with two out, but a fly out ended the frame.

Washington regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth with a two-out infield single by senior Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) that plated senior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson). Kramer got on base after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

The Sea Gulls tied it in the bottom half of the fourth with a two-out rally of their own. Devon Quaglietta doubled to left and took third on a balk. He came in to score on an infield hit by Brian Green to knot the contest at 2-2.

The hosts got runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth, but sophomore pitcher Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) induced Celenza to hit into a inning-ending 4-6-3 double play to keep the score level at 2-2.

Salisbury would take a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with three two out runs. Ryan Smith led off the sixth with a two-bagger down the left field line. With two outs, Brian Green singled to left field to plate Smith. Trevor Cobb increased the Sea Gulls' lead to 4-2 on a single to centerfield to knock in Green. Will Evans made it 5-2 when he scored on an error by WC. The hosts added a single run in the bottom of the seventh when Celenza doubled in Kellinger to make it 6-2. In the eighth, the Sea Gulls tacked on three more runs to provide the final margin.

Celenza went 3-for-5 with four RBI to spark the Salisbury offense. Green went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Smith was 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and run scored, Cobb went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in and Quaglietta totaled a 2-for-4 day and scored once. On the mound, Drew Baldwin pitched two innings in relief to get the win and is now 1-0 on the year.

For Washington, Boucher, Connole, Keiper and Normoyle each had one hit on the afternoon. Connole and Keiper each plated a run and Kramer and Normoyle each crossed the dish once. Pitching wise, Mattingly takes the loss in his Shoremen debut and falls to 0-1. He went six innings, giving up five runs, but only three of them earned. He allowed eight hits and struck out two.
