Box Score Coyle Scores Three Goals, Assists on
Another in Victory
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- Visiting Washington College
raced out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter en route to a 11-7
men's lacrosse victory over host Elizabethtown College this
afternoon. The Shoremen improved to 2-0 with the victory, which
spoiled the Blue Jays' season opener.
Freshman attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy,
MD/Glenelg Country School) got the Shoremen on the board
with a goal with 8:47 to play in the first quarter. Lewis scored
again 2:29 later, this time off an assist from freshman midfielder
Jesse Speth (Chicago, IL/Northside Prep), to make
the score 2-0 in favor of Washington. Lewis then assisted on a goal
by sophomore attackman Trey Hilberg (Upperco,
MD/Hereford) with 4:47 left in the first. Hilberg assisted
on the Shoremen's fourth goal of the game as he found junior
midfielder Shane Kaski (Mosley, VA/Midlothian) for
a score with 3:54 on the clock. Freshman midfielder Patrick
Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) finished off the
first quarter scoring with an extra-man goal off an assist from
sophomore midfielder Dave Lundquist (West Chester,
PA/Henderson) with 53 seconds remaining in the first to
give the Shoremen their 5-0 cushion after 15 minutes.
Neither team scored in the second quarter, though
the Blue Jays held a 9-5 advantage in shots in the period. Freshman
goalie Matt Miller (Baldwin, MD/Calvert Hall) made
six saves in the first half for the Shoremen as Elizabethtown
failed to score on any of its 16 shots over the first 30 minutes.
The Blue Jays finally cracked Washington's defense
1:45 into the third quarter when Cory Boushell
scored to cut the lead to 5-1. The Shoremen answered with a goal by
Kaski with 11:39 remaining in the third quarter, but Aaron
Weber fired in a goal for Elizabethtown with 9:06 on the
clock to make it 6-2. The score remained that way until Coyle
scored another extra-man goal, this time off an assist from Kaski,
with just 10 seconds to go in the third quarter, pushing the margin
to 7-2.
Lundquist tallied the Shoremen's eighth goal off a
Hilberg assist with 8:47 left in the game. Senior midfielder
Chad Freedman (Charlottesville, VA/St.
Anne's-Belfield) tacked on Washington's ninth goal 1:36
later. Weber scored Elizabethtown's third goal off an assist by
Boushell on an extra-man opportunity with 6:10 to go. Coyle fired
in his third goal of the game with 4:56 remaining to stretch the
margin to 10-3. Boushell found Weber again for the Blue Jays'
fourth goal with 4:16 remaining, but Lundquist answered for
Washington with an extra-man goal off a Coyle assist with 2:39 to
play to up the lead to 11-4.
The Blue Jays scored three late goals to provide
the final margin. Weber assist on an extra-man goal by Jon
Day with 1:09 left, scored a goal with 47 seconds
remaining, and assisted on another Day goal 13 seconds later.
Coyle paced the Shoremen with three goals and one
assist in the win, while Lundquist, Kaski, and Lewis each tallied
two goals and one assist. Hilberg added a goal and two assists.
Weber, Day, and Boushell accounted for all of
Elizabethtown's scoring as Weber tallied four goals and two
assists, Boushell finished with a goal and two assists, and Day
scored two goals.
Miller finished with eight saves and three goals
allowed for the Shoremen, playing the first 55:04. Freshman
Mike Runk (Westminster, MD/Mount St. Joseph)
played the rest of the game in goal for Washington, allowing four
goals and making two saves in 4:56. Brendan
Corcoran made seven saves for Elizabethtown.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 3:00
p.m. game at 10th-ranked Washington and Lee.
