Box Score 2 Mattingly Tosses Complete Game in Game
Two
COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Host Ursinus College and
visiting Washington College split a Centennial Conference baseball
doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Ursinus. The
Bears won game one, 5-3, but the Shoremen came back to take game
two by a 2-1 tally. The Shoremen are now 12-10 overall and 7-5 in
conference, while the Bears are now 13-13-1 and 4-8
respectively.
In the second game, the two sides entered the ninth
tied at 1-1. WC sophomore Ryan Normoyle
(Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) singled to right field with one
out in the top of the ninth and went to second on a wild pitch. He
reached third base on a throw to first following a strikeout.
Normoyle would score on a two-out single to centerfield off the bat
of freshman Kyle Aldrich
(Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional). The RBI hit capped a
perfect 3-for-3 game two for Aldrich. Sophomore pitcher Shane
Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) retired the
Bears 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to secure the win for Washington.
Mattingly went the distance for the Shoremen, striking out 10 Bears
in the process to improve to 4-1 on the season. He scattered eight
hits and did not walk a batter.
Bret Umstead's RBI double in the
bottom of the third with two away drove in Brandon
Sullivan to give Ursinus a 1-0 lead. Washington tied it in
the top of the the sixth when freshman Sean Connole
(Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) scored on an RBI
groundout by sophomore John Rolewicz
(Bear, DE/Salesianum).
Jake Kohler took the loss for the
Bears in the nightcap as he went 8 2/3 innings. He gave up two
runs, one earned, surrendered seven hits, struck out five and
walked one. Umstead, Rob Vogt and Ben
Gresh had two hits apieces for Ursinus in game two.
In game one, Ursinus scored three runs in the
bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead on a three-run double by
Tommy Clarke. Washington got one run back in the
top of the third on a Normoyle single to score senior Matt
Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton). The Bears
scored twice in the bottom half of the third on a Gresh double and
a sacrifice fly by Rich Guthridge to put Ursinus
up 5-1.
WC reduced the Ursinus lead to 5-2 in the top of
the fifth on a single by Normoyle that scored Connole. Connole
singled in freshman Tyler
Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) to cut the
hosts' lead to 5-3 in the sixth but could draw no closer.
Sullivan went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Clarke
went 2-for-2 with three RBI for Ursinus in the opener.
Chris Fusco also had two hits for the hosts. On
the mound, Steve Christakos got the win and
improves to 3-2. He hurled a complete game, allowing just two
earned runs and striking out six WC hitters.
Normoyle went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener
for Washington, while Connole went 2-for-4. On the mound, senior
Chris Smith
(Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the loss and falls to
3-2. He went the distance for the Shoremen, striking out three
Bears.
The Shoremen return to the field on Tuesday with a
3:30 p.m. game versus Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference action
at Athey Baseball Park.
