Loss
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Casey Grugan
scored four goals and assisted on five others to lead 13th-ranked
Cabrini College to a 15-11 non-conference men's lacrosse victory
over host Washington College tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby,
Jr. Stadium.
The score was tied at 5-5 after the first quarter
and the Shoremen (4-9) took a 6-5 lead on a goal by junior
midfielder Shane Kaski (Mosley, VA/Midlothian)
2:13 into the second quarter. The Cavaliers (11-3) then ran off
four unanswered goals to end the quarter, capped off by a
Bobby Thorp goal with 38 seconds to go, to build a
9-6 halftime lead.
Cabrini scored three of the first four goals of the
third quarter to open up a 12-7 lead on a goal by Jeff
Crosby off an assist from Rich Romanelli
with 6:59 left in the period. Cabrini went on the build two
six-goal leads before Washington junior midfielder Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored the
final two goals of the game to account for the final margin.
Brian Hill joined Grugan with four
goals and also added two assists for the Cavaliers. Andrew
Protenic fired in three goals for Cabrini, while Thorp had
two goals. Mike Gurenlian went 13-for-20 on
face-offs, while Erick Zarzecki made 14 saves.
Herdegen finished with a career-high five goals and
one assist for the Shoremen. Senior midfielder Chad Freedman (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) scored
two goals, while sophomore attackman Billy Stafford (White
Hall, MD/Hereford) had a goal and two assists. Senior
defenseman Thom Cecere (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's)
scooped up a career-high nine ground balls, while freshman goalie
Matt Miller (Baldwin, MD/Calvert Hall) made 17
saves.
Cabrini held a 45-35 advantage in shots in the game
and won 16 of the game's 28 face-offs.
The Shoremen will conclude their season on May 8th
when they travel to Salisbury University for the annual "War on the
Shore" for the Charles B. Clark Cup. Opening face-off is scheduled
for 1:00 p.m.
