Box Score Rolewicz Goes 3-for-5 with Two RBI, Two
Runs
CHESTERTOWN, MD - Visiting Arcadia University pounded out 16
hits en route to a 10-6 win over host Washington College, 10-6, on
Wednesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference
action. The Knights are now 5-16 on the season, while the Shoremen
fall to 11-8.
The Shoremen scored two runs in the bottom of the
first to take a quick 2-0 lead. Sophomore John Rolewicz
(Bear, DE/Salesianum) plated freshman Sean Connole
(Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) on a double to
left-center to make it 1-0. Rolewicz scored on a sacrifice fly off
the bat of fellow classmate Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel,
NJ/Lenape) for the second run of the frame.
The Knights got one back in the top of the second
on a two-out double by Jerry Smith that drove in
Joe Rafanelli to reduce the WC lead to 2-1. In the
bottom of the frame, freshman Kyle Aldrich (Warren,
NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) scored on an RBI single off
the bat of Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway
Regional) to get the lead back to two runs at 3-1.
Jason Heryla robbed Connole of hit in left field
for the third out and prevented another Washington from scoring
another run.
Arcadia's Marc Gottfried walked to
lead off the third and scored on a triple by Rich Schlamowitz to
cut the Shoremen's lead to 3-2. Schlamowitz scored on a one-out
single by Kyle Jackson to even the game at 3-3.
The Knights took their first lead of the game at 4-3 on a two-out
RBI single by Gottfried that landed between the second baseman and
right fielder in shallow right to score Heryla, who reached on a
fielding error.
Mike McElhatton hit a double to
center that drove in David Kutteroff to give
Arcadia a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth. Rafanelli extended the
visitors' lead to 6-3 in the inning on a single up middle that
plated Kyle Jackson.
Washington loaded the bases with no outs in the
bottom of the fifth. Arcadia threw out two runners at the plate on
fielder's choices. The Shoremen did get one run when Connole was
forced in after Normoyle was hit by a pitch to trim the Arcadia
lead to 6-4. However a flyout ended the threat with the bases
loaded.
Schlamowitz gave the Knights a three-run bulge at
7-4 when he plated Smith on a infield single with two away in the
top of the eighth. Matt Pempkowski in the top of
the ninth hit a three-run home run over the centerfield wall to
give Arcadia a six-run lead at 10-4. The Shoremen got a pair of
runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI hits by Rolewicz and senior
Matt Boucher (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) to
provide the final margin.
On the mound for Arcadia, Dan
Manning got the win and improves to 1-0 as he threw the
first five innings. At the dish, Schlamowitz was 5-for-5 with two
RBI and run scored to pace the Knights' attack. Jackson, Kutteroff
and McElhatton all had two hits, while Heryla and Smith both
crossed home plate twice. Pempkowski drove in a game-high three
runners.
For Washington, Rolewicz led the Shoremen offense
with a 3-for-5 afternoon with two RBI and two runs scored. Connole
was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Normoyle had two RBI for the
hosts. On the hill, Connole took the loss and falls to 0-2.
Washington hosts McDaniel on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in
a Centennial Conference game.
