Shoremen Rally To Subdue Green Terror, 6-4

Box Score

Rolewicz Goes 4-For-4 At The Plate

CHESTERTOWN, MD – The Washington College baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and added a run in the bottom of the eighth to best visiting McDaniel, 6-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in Centennial Conference baseball action.  The Shoremen are now 11-7 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Green Terror drop to 8-7 and 1-2 respectively.

In the top of the first inning, the Green Terror scored three times and totaled four hits to grab a 3-0 lead.  Marshall Betts singled through the right side to put the visitors up 1-0 and scored Brandon Kline.  The next batter, James Chiorello doubled to left-center that chased home Pat Christopher and gave the guests a two-run lead.  The scoring in the frame was capped off by a single to left field off the bat of Matthew Pace that allowed Betts to touch the dish and gave McDaniel a 3-0 lead.

The lead would hold up until WC scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead.  Junior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) lead off the inning with a single through the left side and took second on a base hit by sophomore Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) that fell in between three McDaniel players in shallow centerfield.  The next batter, junior Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) reached on a fielding error by the Green Terror to load the bases with no outs.  Sophomore Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) singled to right field and the ball was misplayed and rolled all the way to the fence in right.  Rolewicz and Cotterell scored to cut it to 3-2 and Wilcox beat the throw to tie the game at 3-3.  On the play, Willis ended up at third base.  Willis would score when the next hitter, sophomore Ryan Mulhearn (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Regional) tripled to left-center and it gave Washington its first lead of the game at 4-3.  Mulhearn came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) to give the Shoremen a two-run lead and capped the scoring in the seventh.

In the eighth, Washington tacked on another run when Rolewicz scored on a fielding error to give the hosts a 6-3 lead.

McDaniel loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth and cut the lead to 6-4 when Betts hit a line drive single to the pitcher and allowed Chris Longo to touch the dish.  Following the hit, Washington put in junior pitcher Hunter Draheim (Hollywood, MD/Leonardtown) to get the final out.  Draheim got Ricky LaSota to ground out to Cotterell to end the game.

At the plate for Washington, Rolewicz spearheaded the offense with a 4-for-4 afternoon and he also scored twice.  The four hits is a personal best for Rolewicz.  Willis and Mulhearn both totaled two hits with Willis driving in a pair of runners.  On the mound, sophomore pitcher Joe Kearney-Argow (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) got the victory and improved to 2-1 on the year.  He tossed 8.2 innings and struck out seven, while allowing just four hits and one run following the first inning.  Draheim got the final out to record his first save of the year and his first save since March 31, 2009 at Swarthmore.

Christopher had three hits to lead the McDaniel attack, while Betts had two hits and two RBI for the visitors.  On the mound, Gio Fricchione took the loss and drops to 1-1 on the year.  He went seven innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits.  He struck out six batters in the contest.  The Green Terror hurlers did not give up a walk in the game.

Washington steps out of conference play tomorrow afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. game Widener.
