Blue Jays Top Shoremen, 3-1

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- A pair of home runs by Jeff Lynch and Kyle Neverman proved to be all the offense visiting Johns Hopkins would need as the Blue Jays recorded a 3-1 Centennial Conference baseball victory over host Washington College this afternoon at Athey Park. The Blue Jays improved to 21-9-2 overall and 11-2 in conference play with the win, opening up a three-game lead for first place in the conference. The Shoremen fell to 23-7 and 8-5 with the loss.

Lynch led off the second inning with a home run to right field to give Hopkins a 1-0 lead. Richie Carbone walked to lead off the third; two batters later, Neverman belted his home run, also to right field, to account for the Blue Jays' final two runs.

Washington senior Dwight Wilcox (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the eight. Sophomore Pat Kinsella (Guilford, CT/Guilford) came in to run for Wilcox and advanced all the way to third base on a wild pitch. Sophomore Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford) reached on a one-out walk, but was caught in a run down trying to steal second base.  Kinsella scored Washington's lone run during the run-down.

Sam Eagleson pitched a complete game for the Blue Jays, allowing just two hits on two walks while striking out eight batters.  Senior Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) pitched well in the loss for Washington, allowing the three runs on six hits and two walks in seven innings.  Sophomore AJ Schmalfuhs (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) pitched the final two innings for the Shoremen, allowing no runs on no hits and two walks.

Aaron Borenstein was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk for the Blue Jays. An infield single by junior third baseman Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) in the fifth and a single to left field by senior catcher John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum) were the Shoremen's two hits on the day.

The Shoremen and Blue Jays will complete their home-and-home series Friday in Baltimore at 3:30 p.m.
