Fords Down Shoremen In First Day of CC Baseball Tournament, 3-2

Box Score

WC To Play McDaniel on Saturday Morning In Elimination Game

HAVERFORD, PA – Haverford's Justin Coulter singled home the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the host Fords downed visiting Washington College, 3-2, at Kannerstein Field in the first day of the Centennial Conference Baseball Tournament.  The second seeded Fords improve to 22-17 overall, while the third-seeded Shoremen fall to 26-11.

Coulter drove in his second run of the game in the last of the seventh on a single up the middle to drive in Nick Miranda to put Haverford up 3-2 with two outs after the first two hitters were retired.

The Shoremen broke through in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when junior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) doubled to left-center to drive in freshman Matt Christopher (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) with two outs.

Washington made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth when junior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) singled through the right side with two away to plate senior John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum)

Haverford responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth.  Justin Coulter singled to right-center to drive home Miranda for the Fords' first run with one out and Alex Hudek's two-out single to center scored Coulter to even the game up at 2-2.

Coulter was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Miranda was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.  On the mound, Tommy Bergjans got the win and improves to 6-3.  He went the distance, striking out seven batters and scattering five hits.  He gave up just one earned run and did not walk a batter.

Senior pitcher Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) took the loss and drops to 6-2.  He tossed a complete game too, striking out eight and allowing eight hits.  He surrendered three runs, all of which were earned and walking a pair of hitters.

The Shoremen will play at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning at JHU Baseball Diamond on the campus of Johns Hopkins against McDaniel, the tournament's four seed.  McDaniel fell to host and top seed Johns Hopkins, 6-2, on Friday afternoon.  The loser of the game is eliminated from the double elimination tournament, while the winner advances to play the loser of Haverford and Johns Hopkins at 4:00 p.m.
