CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College split a two-game series with visiting Montclair State played over Friday and Saturday at Athey Baseball Park in non-conference baseball action.  The Red Hawks (1-1) won the first game played on Friday and concluded on Saturday afternoon, 12-4, while the Shoremen (1-2) took the Saturday contest, 4-2.  The win was the first victory for head coach Travis Turgeon.

Montclair State got one run back in the eighth when with one out Nappe grounded out to Willis at third, but it scored Jose Carlos Padilla to trim the lead to 4-2.  The Red Hawks were retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.  Connole made a diving catch off the bat of Matt Moreno in shallow centerfield to end the game.

Matthews and Thomas had two hits each as WC had eight hits in the win.  Connole had a pair of RBI.  On the mound, senior pitcher Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) got the victory and is now 1-0.  He went five innings and allowed just one run on three hits.  He walked three and fanned five.  Freshman pitcher Pete Breslauer (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) pitched a perfect ninth for his first collegiate save.

Washington took advantage of a Montclair State error to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park), who reached on the error, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Marinelli to cut the lead to 4-1.  With two outs, Thomas scored on a base hit to left field by freshman Richardello to trim the lead to 4-2.

The Shoremen tied the game at 4-4 in the last of the sixth on two more unearned runs.  Matthews, who reached second due to a fielding error after getting on via a base hit, scored on an infield single off the bat of sophomore Kyle Mikula (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) to trim the lead to 4-3.  With one out, Richardello hit a sacrifice fly to left that plated Thomas to tie the game at 4-4.
