Box Score Team Steals 12 Bases With Baquer and Cotterell Each Swiping Four
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Host Washington College recorded 12 stolen bases on Wednesday afternoon in a 9-4 non-conference baseball victory over visiting St. Mary's (MD) at Athey Baseball Park. The Shoremen improve to 7-7 overall, while the Seahawks drop to 7-13.
Leading the stealing barrage for the Shoremen were senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) as they both recorded a career-high four stolen bases in the win. The duo are the first WC players to steal four in a game since Ryan Normoyle '12 stole four versus Oneonta State on March 13, 2009. For Baquer, he has seven steals in the last two games as he swiped three bases against Greenville last Saturday. Junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) stole two bases for the fourth time in his career, while senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) and sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) each had one steal. Washington had 12 steals in 13 attempts and it was the most steals since the squad stole 13 at Swarthmore on April 15, 2005.
The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Jared Eaker hit a single down the right field line to score Brad Dioguardo. The Shoremen scored twice in the bottom half of the second to take a 2-1 lead. Baquer, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on a fielding error to knot the game at 1-1 and Cotterell came home on a fielder's choice to put the hosts up top 2-1.
St. Mary's scored twice to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third. Corey Napier's RBI single up the middle plated Luke Green to tie the game at 2-2 and Napier came home on a base hit to right-center off the bat of Alex Lenovitz to put the visitors ahead by a run. The Seahawks took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth when Eric Skrzyniarz came home on an RBI single to right-center by Green. Washington got one back in the last of the fourth when Baquer scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) to trim the St. Mary's lead to 4-3.
The Shoremen took control of the game with a three-run bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead with all three runs coming with two outs. Matthews drove home Connole on an infield single to the pitcher as Matthews beat the throw to first to tie the game at 4-4. For Connole, it was his 100th career run scored, just the fifth Washington player to score 100 or more runs in a career. Matthews would put Washington up for good at 5-4 when he scored on a double by Baquer and Baquer would from second as he stole third and took home on a wild pitch on the same play to cap the scoring in the frame.
Washington scored three times in the last of the seventh to close out the scoring. Sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) led off the inning with a home run, the team's first home run of the year, to take a 7-4 lead. Cotterell singled through the left side to plate Baquer and gave WC an 8-4 lead with one out and Cotterell came around to score on a wild pitch to put Washington up five to provide the final margin at 9-4.
Baquer was 3-for-3 with four runs scored for Washington as the team had nine hits in the win. Cotterell had two runs and two RBI, while Thomas had a pair of hits, including a homer. On the mound, freshman pitcher Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) got the win to improve to 3-0 as he went the first five innings.
Green was 3-for-3 and Napier was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Seahawks, who had seven hits in the contest. On the hill, Carlos Cruz took the loss and falls to 1-3.
The Shoremen return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against visiting New Jersey City University at Athey Baseball Park.
