Baquer Nets Career-High Four Hits and Jarrell Pitches Seven Innings For WC

WASHINGTON, DC – Mitchell Bensman scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the 14th inning to lift host Gallaudet to a 2-1 win over visiting Washington College in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field.  The Bison improve to 8-13 on the year, while the Shoremen fall to 8-8.

Bensman led off the last of the 14th with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a Washington throwing error with nobody out.  The next batter, Ryan Rippy reached on another throwing error and the errant throw would allow Bensman to score the winning run.

The Bison scored the game's first run in the last of the third when with one away the hosts tried to pull off a double steal with Rippy going for second and Jeremy Murphy taking home.  Rippy was thrown out stealing on the play, but Murphy scored on the throw down to second to make it 1-0.

Washington tied the game in the top of the fifth when sophomore Michael Festa (Newtown, PA/Council Rock North) scored on a single to left field by freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) with two away to knot the contest at 1-1.

For the Bison, Bensman and William Bissell each had two hits and the team recorded 10 hits in the win.  On the mound, Marcus Smith pitched a scoreless top of the 14th to get the win and improves to 1-3 on the year.

For the Shoremen, Baquer went 4-for-6 and established a personal best with the four hits.  Sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) had a pair of hits for the guests.  WC had 11 hits in the game.  Pitching wise, sophomore Sean Baldwin (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) took the loss and drops to 0-2 on the year.  Starting pitcher Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) tossed the first seven innings, allowing just one earned run on eight hits.  He walked two and struck out four.

The Shoremen are back in the Nation's Capital tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. when they play at Catholic.
