Baquer Drives In Career-Best Four RBI

LANGHORNE, PA – Visiting Washington College jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings en route to a 15-1 victory over host Cairn University on Tuesday afternoon  in non-conference baseball action on the campus of Cairn University.  The Shoremen improve to 2-2 on the year, while the Highlanders drop to 0-5.

Washington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) plated senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) on an RBI groundout. 

The Shoremen blew the game open with a six-run second inning to take a 7-0 lead.  Junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) scored a sacrifice fly by freshman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) to make it 2-0.  Senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) plated senior Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) on an RBI single to make it 3-0. Connole came around to score on a Baquer single to increase the lead to 4-0.  Cotterell scored on a bases loaded walk to sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) to increase the lead to 5-0.  Marinelli completed the outburst with a two-run single to drive in Baquer and Matthews.

The Shoremen tacked on three runs in the top of the third to take a 10-0 lead and added a run in the top of the fourth to lead 11-0.  The Highlanders got their run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 11-1.  WC scored twice each in the top of the seventh and ninth frames to cap the scoring.

The Washington offense had 13 hits and eight walks in the victory.  Connole went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Baquer had four RBI and two runs scored.  The four RBI by Baquer led all players.  Marinelli went 1-for-1 with two RBI and also reached base on hit by pitch.  Cotterell tied his career-high with three runs scored and that led all players.  Richardello had two hits for the guests.  On the mound, freshman Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) went five innings to get the win and picks up his first collegiate win to go to 1-0.  He struck out four and allowed only three hits.

Kyle Parisi and Caleb Lang each had two hits for Cairn who had seven hits in the game.  Parisi had an RBI and Jeremy McAleck scored the team's one run.  On the hill, Michael DeLuca took the loss and falls to 0-1.

The Shoremen are scheduled to host in-state rival Frostburg State on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
