Box Score Marinelli With Career-Highs of Five Hits and Four RBI
CHESTERTOWN, MD – Junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) had career-highs of five hits, in six at-bats, and four RBI to spark an 18-hit performance by host Washington College in a 16-4 victory over visiting Swarthmore on Sunday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in Centennial Conference baseball action. The Shoremen improve to 13-17 overall and 4-6 in the conference, while the Garnet drop to 18-11 and 6-4 respectively.
Swarthmore jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of two out bases loaded walks to Trevor Shepherd and Brian Kaissi that scored Tim Kwilos and Scoop Ruxin respectively. Washington cut the lead to 2-1 in the last of the first when Marinelli scored on a throwing error with one out.
The Garnet made it 4-1 in the top half of the second with another pair of two-out runs. Joe Rizzo doubled to left to chase home Kwilos and Danny MacMahon singled through the left side to plate Rizzo to give Swarthmore a three-run lead.
Washington took the lead for good by scoring four runs as the hosts scored the last 15 runs of the game unanswered by the guests. With one out, senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) hit a three-run double down the left field line with junior Ian Remington (Guilford, CT/Guilford), freshman Kyle Mikula (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) and senior Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) to knot the game at 4-4. The Shoremen took the lead for good when Connole scored from second base on a single through the right side by freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) at 5-4 with one away.
The Shoremen made it 6-4 in the last of the fourth when Willis scored on a sacrifice fly by Baquer. Washington scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-4 lead. Freshman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) delivered home Remington with one out to make it 7-4 hosts. Richardello, along with Connole, came around to score on a two-run double to left field by Marinelli to give the Shoremen a five-run cushion.
Washington scored six times in the last of the seventh inning and tacked on a single run in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final margin.
In addition to Marinelli, Connole was 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored, Willis went 2-for-3 with four runs scored, Baquer had two hits and two RBI, Remington had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI and Richardello scored twice. On the hill, sophomore pitcher Michael Long (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) got the win and is now 1-2 on the year. He tossed 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out three. The Shoremen bullpen hurled 7 1/3 innings of no runs allowed.
Kwilos was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Garnet, while Ruxin was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Swarthmore had nine hits in the game and committed all three errors in the ballgame. On the mound, Joe Warren took the loss and falls to 1-2. He allowed five runs in 1 1/3 innings.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Shoremen travel to Franklin & Marshall for a 3:30 p.m. Centennial Conference game.
