Shoremen Finally Get Better of Saints In 10 Innings, 10-6

Box Score

Matthews Three Hits, Three RBI and Two Runs; Kinsella Three Runs and Two Hits

ARLINGTON, Va. – Visiting Washington College scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning to break a 6-6 tie to down host Marymount, 10-6, in a non-conference baseball game on Sunday afternoon at Bishop O'Connell Field.  The Shoremen improve to 8-7 on the year, while the Saints drop to 4-18.

In the top of the 10th inning, Washington scored four times to snap a 6-6 tie and take a 10-6 lead.  The guests loaded the bases with nobody out and with one away, senior Ian Remington (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) was plunked and forced home freshman Charlie Meder (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) to give WC the lead at 7-6.  The Shoremen made it 8-6 on a fielder's choice to score senior shortstop Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) to make it 8-6.  The next batter, junior centerfielder Scott Matthews (Goshen, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) singled through the left side to plate both junior second baseman Brian Alexa (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and senior Lucas DiFabbio (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) to take a four run lead.  In the bottom half of the 10th, the Saints got a runner to second base with two outs, but did not score.

The Shoremen scored twice in the top of the third inning to grab a 2-0 lead.  Senior right fielder Pat Kinsella (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) scored on a single to shortstop by freshman designated hitter Logan Dubbé (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) for the game's first run with nobody out.  Matthews scored on a double play for the frame's second run.

Kinsella made it 3-0 when with one away he scored on a squeeze play off the bat of sophomore left fielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park)

Marymount would get onto the scoreboard with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Bret Phillips singled through the right side to plate Lorenzo Calderon for the team's first run and hit of the ballgame.  The Saints would tie the game two batters later when Gannon White plated Karlis Graubics on an infield single to third base and on the same play Phillips would come around to score on a throwing error to knot the game.

Washington regained the lead in just two batters in the top of the seventh when Matthews plated Kinsella on a triple to right-center after Kinsella was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.  Matthews would come home on a wild pitch to give WC a 5-3 lead with nobody out.  With two away, Dubbé scored on a two-bagger down the left field line off the bat of Marinelli to cap the three-run outburst and gave the guests a 6-3 lead.

The Saints would get one run back in the last of the eighth inning with two away when White plated Graubics on his second RBI single to third base of the game to trim the lead to 6-4.  Marymount had the bases loaded two batters later, but WC sophomore pitcher John Beck (Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly Academy) got Austin Schnarrs to pop out to Marinelli at short to end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Marymount got three consecutive singles after the first two batters were retired and had the winning run on first base with Brandon Orbe at the plate.  Orbe reached on a fielding error by Marinelli and that allowed Graubics and Jack Breheny to score and tied the game at 6-6 and sent the game to extra innings.

Matthews went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Kinsella went 2-for-4 and dented the dish a career-high three times for Washington.  Dubbé and Marinelli each had two hits as the squad had 10 in the win.  On the mound, Dubbé got the win to improve to 1-1 with his first collegiate victory as he went the last two innings.

White went 2-for-5 with two RBI for Marymount, while Graubics went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Phillips had a pair of hits.  On the mound, Jason Freishtat took the loss and falls to 0-2.  He went 3 1/3 innings, including starting the 10th inning.

The Shoremen are back in action on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. when they travel to Delmarva rival Wesley.  The game was originally slated for 6:00 p.m. at Schutte Park in Dover, Del., but will now be on the campus of Wesley starting at 4:00 p.m.
