Box Score

Acampora Sets Career-High With Three Hits Along With Driving In Two and Scoring Twice; Matthews Leads All Players With Four Hits and Three Runs Scored and Ties For Game-Best With Three RBI

LANCASTER, Pa. – Visiting Washington College scored 13 runs in its first four times to the plate en route to a 14-1 victory over host Franklin & Marshall at Caplan Field on Friday afternoon in a Centennial Conference baseball game.  The Shoremen, who matched their season high in runs scored, improve to 13-16 overall and 4-8 in the Centennial, while the Diplomats drop to 12-18 and 4-8 respectively.

Washington scored three times in the top of the first inning, all coming with one away.  Freshman catcher Michael Acampora (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) singled to left field to score both junior outfielder Scott Matthews (Goshen, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) and senior shortstop Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) to put the Shoremen ahead for good at 2-0.  Sophomore outfielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) scored on a squeeze play off the bat of junior second baseman Brian Alexa (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) to give WC a 3-0 lead.

In the top half of the second, the Shoremen put together a pair of runs after the first two were retired.  Baquer tripled down the left field line to drive in both Matthews and Marinelli to give the guests a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Washington scored twice to push the lead to 7-0 and in the fourth tacked on six more runs to lead 13-0.  The Diplomats got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a run to trim the Washington lead to 13-1.  The Shoremen scored once in the top of the sixth to provide the final margin.

Acampora and Matthews led the 15-hit attack for Washington in the victory.  Acampora went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI, setting a career-high in hits, while Matthews went 4-for-6 with a game-high three runs and tied for game-high with Baquer in RBI with three.  Baquer had two hits and two runs scored in addition to his three RBI.  Remington had a pair of RBI, while scoring twice was Marinelli and sophomore third baseman Addison Hanscom (Nashua, N.H./Nashua).  For Hanscom, the two runs are a personal best.  On the mound, freshman pitcher Billy Griffin (Middletown, Md./Middletown) set a personal bests with innings tossed (eight) and strikeouts (seven).  He gave up just a pair of hits and one earned run and is now 2-1 on the year.

Brandon Theriault took the loss and drops to 0-2 for F&M as the hosts were held to just two hits.

The Shoremen avenged a 14-4 loss at home on Wednesday with today's win.

The Shoremen return to action tomorrow with a home conference doubleheader versus Haverford beginning at 12:30 p.m.
