Kinsella Drives In Career-High Four Runners In Game One Victory and Plates Five in DH; Dubbé Strikes Out Six and Goes Eight Innings In Opener

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington swept a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Haverford on Saturday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park.  The Shoremen captured game one, 11-3, and took game two, 10-2.  The Shoremen improve to 15-16 overall and 6-8 in the Centennial, while the Fords fall to 14-15 and 7-6.  Washington has now won three straight games and have outscored its opponents 35-6.

The Shoremen took both games against the Fords for the first time since 2000 when they won 2-1 on April 5 and 3-2 on April 7.  From 2001-13, Haverford won 23 of 28 meetings between the two schools.

In game one, Haverford used small ball in the top of the second inning to score a pair of runs on squeeze play singles by Matt Tantilucci and Tony Vallaro respectively with one out to score Justin Coulter and Marley Randazzo respectively as the Fords led 2-0 after an inning and a half.

The Shoremen responded with five runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for the rest of the game and the twinbill at 5-2.  Senior outfielder Pat Kinsella (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) with two outs tied the game at 2-2 on a double to left to drive in both junior first baseman Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and junior second baseman Brian Alexa (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel).  After an intentional walk to the next batter, junior outfielder Scott Matthews (Goshen, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.), senior shortstop Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) delivered a two-run single to right to score senior designated hitter Ian Remington (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Kinsella to put WC ahead for good at 4-2.  Matthews came home on a balk to complete the run scoring in the frame.

The Shoremen took advantage of a one-out error by the Fords in the last of the third to score a pair of unearned runs with two away to take a 7-2 lead.  With two outs, Kinsella delivered his second two-run hit in as many innings, a single to center, to score freshman catcher Michael Acampora (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) and Alexa to put the hosts ahead by five.

Haverford scored once in the top of the fifth, while Washington scored a run in the last of the sixth and three times in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final margin.

Kinsella drove in a career-high and game-best four RBI and added two hits in the victory as the Shoremen had 12 hits.  Matthews went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Alexa went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Marinelli drove in two runs, while sophomore outfielder Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) had two hits in the triumph.  On the hill, freshman pitcher Logan Dubbé (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) went eight innings and struck out six batters to set personal bests.  He allowed three runs and walked one in improving to 2-2 on the year.

Tentilucci and Vollaro had a pair of hits each for Haverford in the opener as the guests had nine hits.  On the mound, Kyle Waney took the loss and drops to 1-2. 

The Fords committed three errors in game one, which led to three unearned WC runs, while the Shoremen had no errors.

In game two, the Shoremen scored in each of the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead.  In the last of the first with one out, Thomas drove a double to right-center to score both Matthews and Baquer to give WC a 2-0 lead with one out.  Thomas would score on a base hit to right off the bat of Alexa with two away to make it 3-0 after one.

Matthews scored on a base hit with two outs down the left field line by Baquer to make it 3-0 in the last of the second.  In the bottom half of the third, junior catcher Kyle Mikula (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) scored on a two-out infield single to third by Kinsella and sophomore third baseman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) scored on a single to shortstop by Marinelli to give WC a six-run lead after three.  The two runs in the last of the third came after the first two hitters were retired. 

The Fords got on the board with a two-out run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-1, but the Shoremen scored four times in the last of the sixth to push the lead to 10-1.  Haverford got one run in the top half of the seventh to trim the lead to 10-2 and provide the final margin.

Marinelli went 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two as the hosts had 12 hits in the victory.  Thomas went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Mikula and Richardello had two hits and two runs scored.  Kinsella had a pair of hits, while Matthews came home twice.  On the mound, senior pitcher Ben Cameron (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) got the win to improve to 2-1 as he went six innings.  He gave up six hits, one run, while walking two and fanning five.

William Bannard and Yannick Villaneuva had two hits for Haverford in the second game as the Fords had eight hits.  On the hill, John Miraglia takes the loss and falls to 0-3 as he went the first 5 1/3 innings.

Haverford committed five errors in game two and led to three unearned runs for Washington, while Washington was error free in game two.

The Shoremen return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon in a Centennial Conference game versus visiting Johns Hopkins at 3:30 p.m.
