Baquer Goes 4-for-4 in Loss for Shoremen

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Host Franklin & Marshall College held on to beat visiting Washington College, 3-2, in a Centennial Conference baseball game this afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. The Diplomats improved to 18-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen dropped to 17-7 and 8-3 with the loss.

The Diplomats got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Mike Smeriglio, who led off the inning with a double, scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Luke Seib. Brett Poniros tacked on F&M's second run with a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth, plating Reed Williams. Sophomore Logan Dubbé (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) led off the top of the sixth with a single for the Shoremen and later scored on a double play to cut the Diplomat lead in half. Seib scored on a two-out single by Brian Erb in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead back to two runs.

In the top of the ninth, junior Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Joe Lozupone (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) to make it 3-2, but Franklin & Marshall closer Andrew Mascis retired junior Garrett Richardello (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) on a ground ball to end the game.

Baquer was the only player on either team with multiple hits in the game, going 4-for-4. Sean Cosgriff got the win on the mound for F&M, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out five batters in eight innings of work. Mascis retired all three batters he faced in the ninth. Junior Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) pitched well in the loss for the Shoremen, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in seven and one-third innings.

The Shoremen and Diplomats will conclude their home-and-home series Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Chestertown.
