Box Score

Alexa Three Hits and Run Scored and Mikula RBI Hit

Washington, D.C. – Host Catholic downed visiting Washington College, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Robert J. Talbot Baseball Field in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday afternoon in the season finale for WC.  The Cardinals improve to 23-11-1, while the Shoremen finish their season with their first winning season since 2012 at 18-15.

Washington took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two outs on a base hit to right-center by senior Kyle Mikula (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) that scored senior Brian Alexa (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel).  Catholic would tie it in the last of the first on a RBI single by Jake Crist to right that plated Dan Hinchcliff.

The score would remain tied 1-1 when Catholic scored the winning run in the last of the fifth.  With nobody out Hinchcliff scored on a sacrifice fly by Stefan Poggioli to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead and it proved to be the game-winning run.  The Shoremen would only get one baserunner on the rest of the game, a single by Alexa with one out in the top of the eighth to left.

Sean Carroll got the win for the Cardinals and improves to 2-0 on the year as he went six innings.  He gave up seven hits, one run, walking none and striking out two.  Joseph Salzano tossed a perfect top of the ninth inning to notch his eighth save of the year.  At the plate, Crist and Brennan Cotter each had two hits as the Cardinals had six hits.

Alexa had a game-best three hits for the Shoremen, while freshman Joe Lozupone (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) had two hits as the guests had eight hits.  On the hill, senior Sam McGovern (Middletown, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) took the loss and drops to 2-3 in his final career outing.  He gave up five hits, two runs, one earned, walked and fanned one.

Today marked the final time in a Washington uniform for seven seniors: Alexa, McGovern, Mikula, Joe DiPaola (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Michael Long (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), Scott Matthews (Goshen, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.) and Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley).
