Box Score Fort Pierce, Fla. - - -The Washington College baseball team erupted for five runs in the top of the fourth inning and cruised to a 7-0 victory against the Delaware Valley Aggies on Tuesday evening. Freshman left-hander John Grill was sensational in his first career start and earned the victory. The Shoremen improved to 7-4 and have won four of their first five games in the Sunshine State. The Aggies dropped to 1-4 in the early season.
How It Happened
- The Shoremen scored the only run that they would need in the top of the second inning. Second baseman Jack Kingman drew a walk and third baseman Joe Curtin followed with a single to center. The duo advanced to second and third on a wild pitch and then shortstop CJ Gillmer brought in Kingman with an RBI groundout.
- Washington exploded for five runs on four hits and were aided by a pair of walks in the top of the fourth. Catcher Ryan Zwier launched a double to left center to open the frame and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Joe Otto. Kingman and Curtin then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Gillmer followed by ripping a single to left to plate Zwier. Designated hitter Dylan Nepert made it 4-0 with a bases-loaded double to left center, scoring Kingman and Curtin. Center fielder Ben Ruvo chased Aggie starter Jeff Defazio after delivering an RBI single to score Gillmer. The Shoremen scored their final run of the inning after an RB groundout off the bat of right fielder Chris Baker.
- The Shoremen added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Ben Ruvo singled in Gillmer, who led off the inning with a double to left center.
For the Shoremen
- Grill was sensational in his first career start as he scattered five hits over 5.0 scoreless innings of work. Grill did not issue a walk and whiffed four batters.
- Ben Pika followed Grill with two perfect innings, while Ryan Mostoller and Ethan Kile both tossed clean frames.
- Ben Ruvo went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs to pace the offense while Gillmer was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
- Nepert drove in a pair of runs and Kingman drew three walks and scored twice.
For the Aggies
-Defazio took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits and four walks in just 3.1 innings.
-Delaware Valley managed just five hits and did not draw a walk.
