Box Score 2 Washington Wins Game One 2-1 Before Marymount Rallies to Grab Game Two, 4-3
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Washington College baseball team opened its spring break trip in Florida by splitting a doubleheader with Marymount on Sunday. The Shoremen took game one, 2-1, while the Saints won game two, 4-3. The Shoremen are now 4-4 on the season, while the Saints are 9-4.
Washington College 2 Marymount 1 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- The Shoremen in the top half of the first inning on a one-out base hit to left by Ryan Zwier that scored Max Ruvo to put WC ahead 1-0.
- Washington pushed the lead to 2-0 two innings later as Jack Kingman hit a sacrifice fly to center that was deep enough to score Max Ruvo with one away.
- Bill Wojcik led off the bottom of the fourth with a double for Marymount and he would score on a squeeze bunt with one out off the bat of James DiGiulian to trim the lead to 2-1.
- The Saints loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth and Ryan Mostoller was summoned out of the bullpen to relieve starter Mike Smith. James DiGiulian would hit a fly ball to Ben Ruvo in center and Mike Ferrara tried to score on the fly ball, but he was tagged out at the plate to complete the double play and there was now two away. Mostoller got out of the jam by getting Bryan Harris to fly out to left to end the threat.
- Marymount was retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
For The Shoremen (4-3)
- Hitting: Max Ruvo (2-for-4, two runs), Kingman and Zwier (RBI), Joe Otto (two walks)
- Pitching: Smith (win 1-0, five-plus innings, four hits, one run, one earned, four walks, five strikeouts), Mostoller (one inning, zero hits, zero runs, zero walks, zero strikeouts), Ethan Kile (save 1, one inning, zero hits, runs and walks, two strikeouts)
- Washington had five hits, drew five walks and had one reach via hit by pitch while leaving seven on base.
- The Shoremen had zero errors in the opener.
For Marymount (8-4)
- Hitting: Wojcik (2-for-2, run)
- Pitching: Drew Mead (loss 2-2, three innings, four hits, two runs, two earned, one walk, four strikeouts)
- The Saints notched four hits and drew four base on balls as they left four on base.
- Marymount did not commit an error in the first game.
Notes
- Kile picked up the team's first save of the season.
Marymount 4 Washington College 3 (Game 2)
How It Happened
- The Shoremen scored a run in each of their first two trips to the plate. In the last of the first inning, Zwier singled to left to chase home Chris Baker for the game's first run and in the bottom of the second, Joe Curtin singled to right-center with nobody out to plate CJ Gillmer to make it 2-0.
- Marymount would erase the deficit with a two-run top of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Ferrara singled to right to drive in Bobby Leitzel to trim the lead to 2-1 with one away and the next hitter Wojcik plated Alex Lemery on a base hit to left-center to level the game.
- Gillmer would drive in his second run of the game on a two-out single to left to drive in Zwier to put the Shoremen ahead 3-2.
- The Saints would answer right back in the top half of the sixth on a two-out double by Ryan Maylie that drove in Wojcik to tie the game at 3-3.
- Marymount would take its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh on a single by Ferrara to left to chase in Leitzel with two away to take a 4-3 edge. Ferrara tried to make it 5-3 on a Wojcik single to right, but Baker's throw to the dish was in time to get Ferrara out to keep it a one-run game.
- Washington got two on with two out after the first two were retired, but Marymount pitcher Matthew Schneider got Curtin to hit into a fielder's choice at shortstop and Gillmer was forced out at second to end the game.
For The Shoremen (4-4)
- Hitting: Gillmer (3-for-4, RBI, run), Zwier (2-for-3, RBI, run, intentional walk), Baker (2-for-4, run), Curtin (2-for-4, RBI)
- Pitching: Nick Brauer (five innings, five hits, two runs, two earned, one walk, five strikeouts), Ben Pika (loss 0-1, one inning, two hits, one run, one earned, zero walks and strikeouts)
- Washington had 11 hits and worked out three free passes, while leaving nine on base.
- The Shoremen did not have an error in game two.
For Marymount (9-4)
- Hitting: Wojcik (3-for-4, RBI, run), Ferrara (2-for-4, two RBI), Maylie (2-for-3, RBI)
- Pitching: Schneider (win 3-0, 2 1/3 innings, four hits, zero runs, zero walks, one strikeout), Justin DiDonato (4 2/3 innings, seven hits, three runs, three earned, three walks, seven strikeouts)
- The Saints notched nine hits, drew one walk and had one hit by pitch as they left four on base.
- Marymount had one error in game two, leading to zero unearned runs for WC.
Notes
- Washington is now 20-2 in 22 games in Fort Pierce since the team started going there in 2018. The only other loss was to Earlham by a 3-0 score two years ago. The loss snaps a 16-game winning streak in Florida for the Shoremen.
