Box Score 2 Fort Pierce, Fl. - - - The Washington College baseball team swept Monmouth (Illinois), 11-4 and 7-0 on Monday and improved to 3-1 in Florida. The Shoremen received terrific starts from right-handers Jonah Frankel and Ethan Osgood while the bats provided plenty of fireworks as well. Washington improved to 6-4 on the season while the Scots dropped to 3-2.
How It Happened
Game One
- The Shoremen grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the opening frame and never looked back. Designated hitter Ryan Zwier recorded an RBI single and right fielder Joe Otto added an RBI on a squeeze bunt.
- Second baseman Jack Kingman came through with a two-run single that scored Otto and centerfielder Chris Baker in the third inning.
- Washington increased their lead to 7-0 with three runs in the fifth. Zwier added another RBI single, Kingman lofted an RBI sacrifice fly and third baseman Joe Curtin recorded an RBI single.
- The Shoremen put the game away with four more runs in the sixth frame. Pinch-hitter Aaron Deutsch got things started with an RBI single to left, pinch-hitter Chris Kramedas ripped a two-run single and first baseman Max Hammond lined an RBI single to right.
- The Scots scored four runs in the seventh to get on the board.
For the Shoremen
- Frankel improved to 3-0 after allowing no runs while scattering two hits and a pair of walks. He has yet to allow a run in 18.0 innings of work this season.
- Baker went 3-for-3 and scored three runs to pace the offense.
- Left fielder Max Ruvo (2-for-4, 3 runs), Zwier (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Kingman (2-for-2, 3 RBI) all enjoyed a big game one.
Game Two
- Washington College jumped out on top with two runs in the top of the second inning. Shortstop CJ Gillmer had an RBI single and Curtin scored on a throwing error.
- The Shoremen added three runs in the third to extend their lead to 5-0. Zwier doubled to left to score Max Ruvo, Kingman doubled to left to plate Zwier and Curtin singled to left to bring in Kingman.
- Ruvo added an RBI single in the fourth and Gillmer brought in Curtin with a run-scoring single to complete the scoring in the fifth.
For the Shoremen
- Osgood was sensational as he recorded his first career complete-game shutout to gain his first victory of the year. Osgood allowed just two hits, did not yield a walk and fanned six batters over 7.0 innings.
- Max Ruvo and Curtin (2 runs) both went 3-for-4 and drove in a run. Ruvo increased his batting average to .564 and has a team-high 17 RBI's.
- Gillmer (2 RBI) and Kingman (RBI) were each 2-for-4.
