Washington College 7 Mary Washington 3 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- The Shoremen jumped out to a 2-0 advantage off right-handed starter Zach Adams. Right fielder Chris Baker drew a one-out walk and then advanced to second on a balk. Third baseman Joe Curtin tripled to right center on the next pitch to give the hosts their first run. Second baseman Jack Kingman followed with an RBI groundout to plate Curtin.
- Mary Washington evened the score at 2-2 in their half of the second on two hits and three walks off starter Nick Brauer. Brauer yielded a pair of one-out singles and then walked three consecutive batters before he gave way to reliever Anthony Sofran. Catcher Andrew Gerhart and center fielder Caleb McAlister both drew RBI walks for the visitors. Sofran came on with the bases juiced and stopped the bleeding. The right-hander induced a critical inning-ending double-play off the bat of shortstop Garrett Lyons.
- Kingman launched an opposite field homer to right field to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, staking the Shoremen to a 3-2 lead.
- The Eagles got the run back in the top of the fifth on three hits. First baseman Nick Ciuffreda doubled to right after a one-out single by left fielder Norman Holcomb. However, Holcomb was gunned down at the plate on the play as center fielder Ben Ruvo hit shortstop CJ Gillmer, who then fired a bullet relay to catcher Ryan Colbert for the tag at the plate. Designated hitter Ty Lowe followed with a well-struck iRBI infield single off the glove of second baseman Kingman.
- Washington College went ahead for good, 4-3, with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Designated hitter Nick Tamberino was plunked by a pitch to get things going and then Ruvo executed a textbook sacrifice bunt to advance Tamberino over to second. Gillmer lined out to left but the red-hot Baker came through with a clutch game-winning RBI single to center to score Tamberino.
- The hosts added a run in the bottom of the seventh as Gillmer delivered a clean RBI single to right, scoring pinch runner David Hudak. Hudak replaced left fielder Tommy Buckman, who doubled to left center to open the frame. Hudak advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tamberino.
- The Shoremen added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kingman and first baseman Dylan Neport recorded back-to-back one-out singles and Colbert walked to load the bases.
