Baseball Sweeps Gettysburg In Centennial Conference Opening Weekend; Gillmer Collects 100th Career Hit & Drives In Four Runs

Gettysburg, Pa. –  The Washington College baseball team opened Centennial Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Gettysburg on Sunday. The Shoremen won the opener by a score of 9-3 and took the nightcap by a 5-3 margin. The Shoremen improved to 8-2 overall while the Bullets dropped to 0-2. Senior shortstop CJ Gillmer collected his 100th career hit in the opener and then drove in three runs in the second game.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen scored all of the runs they would need when they exploded for five runs on five hits in the opening frame. Left fielder Max Ruvo ignited the visitors with a triple to right and then came around to score on an infield single by right fielder Chris Baker. Third baseman Joe Curtin produced an RBI single down the left field line to plate Baker and first baseman Dylan Nepert brought second baseman Jack Kingman to the plate with an RBI single to right center. Washington College closed out the big inning with an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Nick Tamberino, which scored Nepert.
- The Bullets cut the deficit to 5-2 with a pair of runs (just one earned) off starter Mike Smith in their half of the first inning. First baseman Aaron Kirby hit a two-out 2-run single to highlight the inning.
- Washington College struck again in the second as Baker tripled to center and then scored on an RBI groundout by Kingman.
- The hosts got their final run of the game in the bottom of the second on an infield single by third baseman Matt Szczesny, plating right fielder Jason Chase, who drew a lead-off walk.
- The Shoremen tacked on single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Kingman recorded another RBI single and the hosts yielded two more unearned runs.

For the Shoremen (7-2, 1-0 C.C.)
- Hitting: Kingman (2-for-5, 2 RBI, run, SB), Baker (2-for-5, 3 runs, RBI, 3B, SB), Max Ruvo (2-for-4, 3B, run, SB), Nepert (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI, 2B), CJ Gillmer (100th career hit, RBI, run)
- Pitching: Mike Smith (Win, 5.0 inn., 5 hits, two earned runs, 3 BB, 4 strikeouts), Alex Bendzlowicz (2.1 inn., hit, 2 strikeouts)

- Hitting: Szczesny (3-for-5, RBI), Kirby (1-for-3, 2 RBI)
- Pitching: Wortmann (3.0 inn., 8 hits, 6 earned runs, no walks, 3 strikeouts)

How It Happened
- The hosts opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning against starter Jonah Frankel. Shortstop Matt Muir delivered a one-out an RBI single to right field to plate center fielder Kyle Miller (single, stolen base).
- The Shoremen evened the score in the top of the fourth as Gillmer delivered a one-out bases loaded RBI single to score Nepert (walk).
- Despite not getting a hit in the bottom of the fourth, the Bullets moved ahead, 3-1, with two runs on an error and a pair of walks as well as a hit batter.
- The visitors scored three big runs in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 4-3 edge. Max Ruvo got things started with a one-out single and then swiped second. Baker followed with a walk and Kingman then   produced an RBI single through the left side. Nepert eventually brought in Baker with another RBI single through the left side to even the game. The Shoremen went ahead for good as Kingman scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Gillmer.
-Washington College added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Gillmer lined a two-out RBI single to right.
