Baseball Earns Doubleheader Split Against Marymount (Va.) On Sunday

Washington D.C. – Visiting Washington College split a pair of contests against Marymount (Va.) on Sunday afternoon at Nats Youth Stadium. The Shoremen lost the opener by a final of 8-1 and came back to defeat the Saints, 8-3 in the nightcap. Senior third baseman Joe Curtin drove in a team-high four runs on the day and sophomore left-hander John Grill pitched five terrific innings to pick up the win.

How It Happened
- Washington College scored their lone run in the top of the first inning as Curtin lashed an RBI single to center field. Shortstop CJ Gillmer led-off the game with a single to right field and then stole second.
-Marymount scored four times off starter Jonah Frankel in the bottom of the third frame. Frankel yielded a walk and two hits to load the bases for first baseman Bryce Smith, who then launched a grand slam over the right center field wall.
-The hosts added three more in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. Second baseman Bobby Leitzel came through with an RBI groundout and designated hitter Bill Wojcik followed with a two-run home run off reliever Izaiah Santiago.
- The Saints closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth as right fielder Jordan Dickson produced an RBI single.

For the Shoremen (2-1)
- Hitting: Curtin (1-for-3, RBI), Jack Kingman (1-for-3, triple)
- Pitching: Frankel (Loss, 3.0 innings, 4 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 walks, 6 K's), Logan Yi (1.0 inning, 2 hits, 0 runs, BB, K), Colin Brown (1.0 inning, hit, 0 runs, K)

- Hitting: Smith (1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI), Wojcik (2-for-2, 2 BB, 2 runs, HR, 2 RBI
- Pitching: Drew Mead (5.0 innings, 4 hits, 1 earned run, 2 BB, 6 K's)

How It Happened
- Washington College scored three times in the opening frame and never looked back. Curtin opened the scoring with a triple to right field that scored Gillmer, who had led-off the game with a single. Kingman then singled through the left side to plate Curtin and came around to score on a throwing error as left fielder Max Ruvo swiped second. 
- The Shoremen continued their early onslaught with three more in the top of the second. First baseman Danny Sheeler ripped an RBI double to right which scored center fielder Ben Ruvo and Curtin promptly doubled to right to plate Sheeler and Gillmer.
- Ben Ruvo delivered a one-out RBI groundout to score Max Ruvo to make it 7-0 in the top of the third. Ruvo was hit by a pitch to open the frame.
- Marymount managed to get on the board as right fielder Casey Baker lofted an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning.
-The Shoremen got the run back in the top of the fifth as Sheeler tagged another double to left field with two outs, plating catcher Ryan Colbert.
-The hosts scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh as catcher Ryan Maylie singled off reliever Ethan Osgood and added another in the ninth on an RBI single by third baseman Jimmy Baker off right-hander Ben Pika.

- Hitting: Curtin (2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2B, 3B), Sheeler (2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 2B), Colbert (2-for-4 , 2B) Kingman (1-for-2, RBI, 2B), Gillmer (1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 BB)
- Pitching: Grill (Win, 5.0 innings, 2 hits, earned run, 2 BB, K), Osgood (2.0 innings, run, 2 hits, K)

 For Marymount (Va.) (1-1)
- Hitting: Alex Lemery (2-for-3)
- Pitching: Justin DiDonato (Loss, 1.2 innings, 5 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 BB, 3 K's)

Notes
- The Shoremen were 6-for-15 in two-out RBI situations in game two and their lead-off hitters went 5-for-9.
- Marymount was just 2-for-16 with runners on base and 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position in game two.
- Saints' pitchers tossed a combined 177 pitches compared to 136 by the Shoremen in the nightcap.
- Sheeler (10 total bases) drove in a team-high six runs over the weekend. Colbert went 6-for-14 (.429) to lead the team in batting. Max Ruvo was hit by a pitch a combined four times and swiped a team-best four bags.
