Baseball Defeats Franklin & Marshall on Deutsch's Walk-Off Hit In Ninth

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Senior second baseman Aaron Deutsch drilled a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth to give the Washington College Shoremen a 2-1 victory over Franklin & Marshall, in a non-conference game at Athey Park on Sunday afternoon. The Shoremen improved to 13-6 (6-4 C.C.) while the Diplomats dropped to 7-4 (7-3 C.C.).

How It Happened
- Franklin & Marshall scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning off starter Nick Brauer, who pitched well in his four-inning outing. Brauer walked center fielder Bobby Falese after getting the opening out. Then, shortstop J.J. Freeman ripped a double to right center to put runners on second and third. First baseman Jakob Hoffman followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to score Falese.

-The Shoremen evened the score in the bottom of the seventh as they were aided by the third error of the game by second baseman Matt Gluck. Pinch hitter Tommy Buckman drew a lead-off walk and pinch runner Ben Ruvo advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Deutsch. Pinch hitter Brandon Hoffman then hit a ground ball to Gluck, whose routine throw to first was in the dirt, allowing Hoffman to reach safely. Ruvo took third on the play setting up left fielder Max Ruvo with one-out. Ruvo was fanned by Grant Burgess, however, right fielder Chris Baker came through with a clutch single up the middle to even the contest.

- Washington College won the game in their final at bat as center fielder Ben Ruvo took Charlie Wright for a long triple to right center to open the frame. That set the stage for Deutsch, who drilled the game-winning hit to right center.

- Four Shoremen relievers combined to toss five scoreless innings after Brauer left after the fourth. Jay Nesson fired two scoreless innings, followed by single innings from Alex BendzlowiczEthan Kile and Ryan Mostoller. Mostoller (2-0) received the win after striking out the side in the top of the ninth.
