Baseball Splits With Dickinson On Senior Day At Athey Park

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Dickinson Red Devils on Saturday afternoon at Athey Park. Dickinson took the opener by a score of 13-9 and the hosts captured the nightcap by a count of 11-5. Five seniors were honored after the completion of the second contest. The Shoremen are now 14-7 while the Red Devils evened their mark at 6-6. The two squads will battle again next Saturday in a pair of Centennial Conference contests at Dickinson.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen drew first blood in the bottom of the first as left fielder Max Ruvo scored on an error. However, Dickinson scored seven unanswered runs to claim a 7-1 advantage. 
- Dickinson scored twice in the top of the second as first baseman Christian Kim delivered an RBI sacrifice fly and right fielder Lukas Atsalis contributed an RBI single to left.
- The visitors scored five times on three hits and a pair of errors in the top of the fourth. Catcher Chris Delsandro recorded a two-run single while designated hitter Andrew Mazzone (single) and second baseman Brendan Pell (walk) added RBI. 
- Washington College came storming back to even the game as they scored six times on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth. Right fielder Chris Baker had the big hit as he blasted a three-run shot over the right field fence, his third homer of the season. Catcher Dylan Nepert and third baseman Joe Curtin added RBI singles and Max Ruvo smoked an RBI double over the third base bag.
- The Red Devils answered with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. Mazzone connected for a two-run homer to left center and centerfielder Derek Smith added a solo shot two batters later.
- The vistors extended their lead to 12-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Shortstop Tom Gannoway and left fielder Alex Cohen recorded RBI singles.
- Dickinson scored their final run of the game on an RBI single by Pell to grab a 13-7 lead in the top of the eighth.
- Baker drew a bases loaded walk and centerfielder Ben Ruvo scored on a wild pitch for the Shoremen in the bottom of the eighth.

For the Shoremen (13-7)
- Hitting:  Baker (1-for-3, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, SB), Max Ruvo (2-for-3, 2 Runs, BB, RBI, 2B), CJ Gillmer (2-for-4, Run)

For Dickinson (6-5)

How It Happened
- The visitors took a 1-0 lead on Pell's RBI single to center in the top of the first inning.
- The Shoremen answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Curtin ripped a two-run single to right field, first baseman Danny Sheeler tripled off the fence in right to drive in another, and second baseman Brandon Hoffman added an RBI single to left.
- The hosts went up 5-1 in the bottom of the third as catcher Ryan Colbert singled to right to being in Hoffman, who reached on a fielder's choice.
- Dickinson got a run back in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to right by Mazzone and closed within 5-3 as they scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
- Washington widened their lead to 8-3 with three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the fifth. Sheeler produced an RBI sacrifice fly, center fielder David Hudak contributed an RBI infield single, and designated hitter Dan Visnov added an RBI sacrifice fly to center.
- Gannaway scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth and first baseman Joey Volpe added an RBI groundout in the seventh to trim the deficit to 8-5.
- The Shoreman scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to get grab a 10-5 lead. Hoffman scored on a throwing error by the catcher during a run-down play and Max Ruvo came through with a two-out RBI single to center.
- Sheeler drilled a homer to right for the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
