Box Score 2 CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College baseball team concluded the 2021 season with a split against Centennial Conference rival Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon at Athey Park. The Mules blanked the Shoremen in the opener 4-0, and the Shoremen won the second game, 5-4, on a walk-off, two-run homer by junior center fielder Chris Baker in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Muhlenberg 4 Washington College 0 (Game 1)
How It Happened
- The Mules scored all of the runs they would need in the top of the first inning when they struck for two runs on a hit and two errors. Center fielder Ryan Hebert opened the game with an infield single to shortstop and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Jack Kent. Hebert then came around to score after shortstop CJ Gillmer committed a fielding error on a groundball by designated hitter Justin Kimmel. Starter Jonah Frankel's attempted pick-off play then resulted in a two-base throwing error that allowed Kimmel to get to third. Left fielder Skyler Petrie delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to plate Kimmel.
- First baseman Cameron Miller gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage in the top of the sixth with a one-out RBI single. Hebert, who opened the frame with a walk, came around to score after recording a stolen base.
- Hebert scored his third run of the contest to make it 4-0 in the top of the eighth. After leading off with a walk, Petrie drove Hebert home with his second RBI sacrifice fly of the contest.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a run on three hits. Baker opened the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a single by first baseman Jack Kingman. Following a strikeout, Gillmer delivered a one-out RBI single through the left side to plate Baker.
- The Mules evened the game in the top of the fifth inning as the visitors staged a two-out rally. Hebert delivered an RBI single to score shortstop Jonathan Toth, who reached on an infield single.
- Washington College went back on top in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs. Left fielder Max Ruvo lead-off with an infield single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Aaron Deutsch. Ruvo then swiped third and came around to score on a passed ball. Baker then drilled a solo homer down the right field line for his fourth bomb of the season.
-The visitors erupted for three runs on just one hit in the top of the sixth to grab a 4-3 advantage. Right-hander Alex Bendzlowicz relieved starter Anthony Sofran and loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter. Right-hander Colin Brown then entered the game and allowed a three-run double down the left field line to right fielder Christian Schwarz.
- Deutsch singled with one out and then Baker smashed a walk-off, 2-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Will Nomura.
