Baseball Records Comeback Win Against Methodist For First Win Of 2022; Fall to Arcadia in Morning Contest

Fayetteville, N.C. – The Washington College baseball team split a pair of contests on Sunday in the Diamond Invitational, held at Methodist University. The Shoremen (1-2) committed five errors and fell 10-9 in the opener versus Arcadia (2-1) and then came back against the host Monarchs (3-2) by a score of 18-14 in the nightcap.

Game I: Arcadia 10, Washington College 9

How It Happened
- The game went back-and-forth in the early innings and the score was even at 5-5 until the Shoremen scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab an 8-5 lead. Senior third baseman Joe Curtin delivered the only hit in the frame, an RBI single to center field, scoring freshman left fielder Cael Magill (BB).  Senior shortstop CJ Gillmer reached on a fielding error, scoring sophomore first baseman Danny Sheeler (BB) and senior right fielder Chris Baker (BB).
- The Knights scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh to close within 8-7. Senior catcher Nick Obarowski recorded an RBI single and junior shortstop Alex Madera plated the other run on a fielder's choice.
- Arcadia scored three times in the top of the eighth off senior reliever Ryan Mostoller to take a 10-8 lead.  Sophomore right fielder Joseph Kumar tied the game with an RBI sacrifice fly and senior first baseman Connor Cheeseman (single) scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore pinch hitter Hunter Curley (BB) gave the Knights a crucial insurance run as he stole third and then came around to score on a throwing miscue by Shoremen freshman catcher Mike Bukowski.
- Sophomore pinch hitter Logan Yi scored Sheeler with an RBI ground out to bring the Shoremen within a run in the bottom of the eighth but they were unable to push across the tying run.

For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Sheeler went 2-for-4, scored three runs and drove in two more. He belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Shoremen a 5-4 lead.
- Magill went 2-for-4 (2B) and scored a run.
- Senior second baseman Jack Kingman (2B) went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Pitching
-FR Joe Morrissey impressed in his first career start, allowing just an unearned run on four hits over 4.0 innings of work. The right-hander fanned seven and walked three.
- Mostoller suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on two hits over 1.1 innings of work. 

For the Knights
Hitting
- Arcadia's first four batters went a combined 8-for-18 with five walks and seven runs scored. Madera, third baseman Emilio Pallante, second baseman Justin Massielo, and Cheeseman all recorded a pair of hits.
Pitching
- Senior right-hander Owen Margolis picked up the win as he allowed an earned run on four hits over 3.2 innings of work. 

Game 2:  Washington College 18, Methodist 14
How It Happened
- The Shoremen, who collected 19 hits and eight walks in the contest, scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman designated hitter Noah Iseman laced a single to right field to plate first baseman Sheeler (single) and center fielder Magill (single). Third baseman Curtin (BB) then scored on a passed ball.
- The hosts answered right back with four runs on five hits and an error off junior right-hander Jay Nesson in the bottom of the first inning. Senior center fielder Ron Wilkerson and sophomore catcher Hunter Hollman produced RBI doubles, sophomore third baseman Stancil Bowles had an RBI single, and sophomore right fielder Justin Blunt scored on a passed ball.
- Methodist added three more runs on two hits in the bottom of the second to widen their lead to 7-3. Wilkerson recorded an RBI groundout and senior designated hitter Spencer Nelson produced a two-run single to left field.
- The Shoremen got a run back in the top of the third as right fielder Baker singled, swiped second, and then scored on an RBI single through the left side by Scheeler.
- Washington trimmed the deficit to 7-5 in the top of the fourth after freshman second baseman Eric Risnychok ripped a one-out triple to center. Magill followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center.
- The Monarchs expanded their lead to 11-5 after scoring four runs on five hits off senior right-handed reliever Nick Brauer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior left fielder Gavin Wheeler recorded an RBI bunt single, freshman second baseman Caleb Rodgers delivered an RBI single to right center, and senior shortstop Will Dagenhart produced a two-run double down the left field line.
- Washington exploded for 11 runs on nine hits in the top of the seventh to grab a 16-11 lead. Baker recorded an RBI single as well as a three-run double to lead the way in a wild half an inning that featured 17 plate appearances. Iseman added a two-run triple and Scheeler, senior second baseman Brandon Hoffman, Risnychok, and Curtin all delivered RBI singles.
- The hosts got a run back in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch and added two unearned runs in the eighth to close within two runs on a throwing error.
- Washington scored two insurance runs to make it 18-14 in the top of the ninth. Iseman delivered an RBI single and Curtin came around to score on a throwing error.

For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Iseman went 3-for-4 (3B), walked twice and drove in five runs
- Baker went 3-for-4 (2B), walked, scored three runs, and drive in four more.
- Risnychok was 3-for-4 (3B), scored three runs and drove in one.
- Sheeler went 3-for-5, scored a pair of runs and drove in two.
- Magill scored three runs, drove in a run, and walked twice.
Pitching
- Junior left-hander John Grill picked up the win as he allowed an earned run and walked a batter in an inning of work.
- Senior right-hander Ethan Osgood (1.0 inning), senior right-hander Colin Brown (1.0 inning), and senior right-hander Alex Bendzlowicz (2.0 innings) all failed to yield an earned run in relief.

For the Monarchs
-Dagenhart went 2-for-5 (2 2B's), scored two runs, and drove in two.
-Nelson went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs.
-Bowles and Wheeler both contributed two hits

The Shoremen will take on Arcadia on Friday afternoon at Mary Washington.
