Shoremen Pound Mary Washington, 20-8; Win Second Straight To Even Record

SHOREMEN EXPLODE FOR 15 RUNS IN FINAL FOUR INNINGS TO PULL AWAY FROM EAGLES

Fredericksburg, Va. – The Washington College baseball team won its second straight contest as they pounded the host Mary Washington Eagles, 20-8, Sunday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Shoremen even their record at 3-3 while the Eagles fall to 2-3. 

How It Happened
- The Shoremen grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second as they put a two-out rally together to strike first. Senior second baseman Brandon Hoffman walked and then advanced to third on a single to left by senior designated hitter Jack Kingman. Senior shortstop CJ Gillmer was then plunked with a pitch to load the bases. Senior catcher Ryan Colbert followed with a walk to score Hoffman.
- The hosts handed Washington two more runs in the top of the third as they made three errors, yielded a walk, and allowed a wild pitch. Senior right fielder Chris Baker walked to open the frame and then stole second as sophomore first baseman Danny Sheeler struck out swinging. Baker then swiped third and came around to score on an error. Senior left fielder Max Ruvo, who had reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Joe Curtin then reached on an error as Ruvo advanced to third. Hoffman followed with an RBI sacrifice bunt that was fumbled by starting pitcher Alex Kobersteen. Ruvo crossed the plate on the play before Kingman lined into a double play to end the inning.
-The Eagles got one back in the bottom of the third as they opened the frame with back-to-back singles off starter Mike Smith. Following a sacrifice bunt, shortstop Bobby Ayscue delivered a one-out RBI groundout to short.
-Washington extended their lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs on two hits and two walks in their half of the fourth. Gillmer and Colbert produced consecutive singles to open the frame and then freshman center fielder Cael Magill delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to right to score Gillmer. The Shoremen then loaded the bases with two out and Curtin drew an RBI walk to score Baker (fielder's choice).
- Mary Washington exploded for five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab a 6-5 edge. Junior reliever Jay Nesson allowed one-out RBI singles to Ayscue and desginated hitter Ty Lowe. Right fielder Noah Roots then brought in the third run with an RBI groundout. The Shoremen would hit three consecutive batters, one by Nesson and the other two by senior right-hander Ethan Kile to account for the other two runs.
-The Shoremen did not trail for long as they responded with five runs in the top of the sixth to reclaim the lead, 10-6. Kingman delivered the only hit of the inning, but it was a big one as he drilled a three-run homer to left field to score Curtin (fielder's choice) and Ruvo (walk). Hoffman added an RBI sacrifice fly and Baker (walk) scored on an error, the fifth of the contest by the hosts.
- Washington added three more runs on three hits and two more errors in the top of the seventh. Ruvo ripped a double to right field to score Baker, who had also doubled. Ruvo and Hoffman (single) then came around to score on a pair of errors.
- The visitors put the icing on the cake with seven runs on four hits in the ninth. Gillmer (RBI double), pinch hitter Joe Morrissey (reached on error, RBI), Magill (RBI single), pinch hitter Cam Tyson (RBI single), pinch hitter Erik Risnychok (RBI single), and pinch hitter Nick Tamberino (RBI sac fly) provided the scoring.
-The hosts scored a pair of runs in the ninth of senior reliver Ryan Mostoller.

For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Baker went 1-for-4, scored a game-high four runs, walked twice and stole three bags.
- Kingman was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. 
- Ruvo went 1-for-3 (2B), RBI, and scored three runs.
- Hoffman went 1-for-2, scored a pair of runs, and drove in two more.
- Risnychok went 2-for-2 off the bench.

Pitching
- Southpaw starter Smith (1-0) allowed a run on three hits over 3.0 innings of work to record the win.
- Freshman righty Alex Martin was terrific in relief as he pitched a pair of scoreless 1-2-3 innings.

For the Eagles
Hitting

-Catcher Owen Reilly went 2-for-3 to pace the hosts.
-Ayscue drove in a team-high two runs.
Pitching
-Alex Kyle took the loss as he surrendered five runs in just 1.1 innings of work.

Notes
- Mary Washington committed eight errors, walked 12 batters, and hit four Shoremen in the contest.
- Baker has already scored a conference-high 14 runs in six contets. He also leads the league with four doubles and five stolen bases.

Up Next
The Shoremen will open their home slate at Athey Park with a doubleheader next Saturday versus Alfred State. The first game will start at 11:30 a.m. with the second game to follow 25 minutes following the completion of the opener.
