Box Score 2 Fort Pierce, Fla. – The Washington College baseball team opened their spring break slate with a doubleheader sweep of the Western Connecticut State Colonials on Sunday afternoon. The Shoremen (7-3) took the opener, 7-1, and completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap. Senior southpaw Mike Smith was terrific in the opener as he failed to allow an earned run over 5.1 innings of work. Senior right fielder Chris Baker went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs. Freshman right-hander Joe Morrissey continued to dominate as he blanked the Colonials (1-2) over 6.0 dominant innings to lead the Maroon & White in game two.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen enjoyed a huge second inning as they scored five runs on three hits, two walks, and an error. The first two batters were retired but senior third baseman Joe Curtin doubled to center and then senior shortstop CJ Gillmer and senior catcher Ryan Colbert drew free passes. Freshman center fielder Cael Magill reached on an error to bring home the first run. Baker followed with a three-run triple and eventually scored on a passed ball.
- Western Connecticut State got one back in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. Left fielder Chris Paszek led-off the frame by reaching on an error by Curtin and came around to score on a fielder's choice RBI by third baseman Chris Elhers.
- Washington scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on four hits. Baker produced an RBI single after Colbert (single) and Magill (double) set the table with hits. Left fielder Max Ruvo lined a single to right to score Magill with the other run.

Hitting
- Baker went 3-for-4 (3B), stole two bases, and drove in four runs.
- Ruvo finished 2-for-4 and stole a base.
Pitching
- Smith (1-0) allowed just an unearned run over 5.1 innings of work. He yielded just two hits and walked a pair while fanning two.
- Seniors Michael Roseman (0.2 innings) and Ethan Osgood (1.0 innings) combined for 1.2 innings of perfect work.
For the Colonials
Hitting
- Shortstop Kevin Smith (1-for-3) and second baseman Jesse Dunn (1-for-2) recorded the lone hits.
Pitching
- Justin Grullon (0-1) took the loss despite allowing no earned runs over 6.0 innings of work. He yielded four hits, walked two and struck out two.

How It Happened
- The Shoremen grabbed the lead with a run in the bottom of the first. Baker was hit by a pitch with one out and then reached third on a failed pick off throw. Sophomore first baseman Danny Sheeler then produced an RBI groundout to first to score Baker.
- Washington scored twice more in the second to grab a 3-0 advantage. Curtin opened the frame with a double to right and took third on a bunt single by Gillmer. Gillmer then swiped second and with one out, freshman second baseman Erik Risnychok reached on a fielding error by the pitcher Orlando Swift. Curtin and Gillmer both scored on the play and Risnychok was awarded an RBI.
- The Shoremen scored a pair of runs as they were aided by two more miscues in the bottom of the third. Baker walked and then took third on another failed pick off throw. Sheeler followed with an RBI single to widen the lead to 4-0 and then scored on a passed ball by catcher Zach Edwards to expand the lead to 5-0.
- The Shoremen scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 6-0 lead. Sheeler laced a one-out triple to score Baker (walk, stolen base).

- Sheeler went 2-for-3, scored, and drove in three runs.
- Baker walked twice and scored a pair of runs.
Pitching
- Morrissey (3-0) scattered five hits, walked three, and whiffed seven batters over 6.0 dominant innings.
- Senior Nick Brauer pitched a scoreless inning to close the door on the Colonials.

-Swift allowed two earned runs over 6.0 innings of work. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out two.
Notes
- Morrissey lowered his ERA to 0.75 as he's allowed just two earned runs over 24.0 innings of work (4 starts). He's allowed just 14 hits and whiffed 30 versus 10 walks.
- WC opponents are batting just .214 thus far this season.
- Baker is now batting .474 and has a .574 on base percentage. He also leads the team in stolen bases (8), runs (19), and extra-base hits (8).
- Sheeler leads the club with 14 RBI.
