Baseball Splits With Widener On Saturday At Athey

SHEELER ENJOYS COMBINED 7-FOR-10 DAY AT THE PLATE

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the Widener Pride on Saturday afternoon at Athey Park. The Shoremen (14-7) took the opener 14-9 while the Pride (8-11) captured the nightcap by a 14-13 margin.

How It Happened
-The visitors opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Austin Oliver.
-The Shoremen scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame. Senior designated Jack Kingman and senior shortstop CJ Gillmer recorded RBI singles and senior left fielder Brandon Hoffman produced a run after reaching on an error. The hosts scored two more runs on wild pitches.
- Widener scored four times in the top of the third to even the game. Oliver smacked a two-run double to right center and third baseman Austin Nuble also had an RBI double. An error by first baseman Danny Sheeler also resulted in a run.
- The Pride went ahead 6-5 in the fourth on an RBI groundout by center fielder Anthony Boccio.
- Washington responded and knotted the score in the bottom of the frame as Hoffman (BB) scored on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Erik Risnychok.
- The Shoremen took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth as they posted three runs to grab a 9-6 advantage. Gillmer recorded a fielder's choice RBI, senior pinch hitter Max Ruvo brought in a run with a fielder's choice, and senior third baseman scored on a throwing error.
- The visitors cut the deficit to 9-8 with two runs in the top of the sixth. First baseman Andrew Yates ripped an RBI double to right and left fielder Jason Morgan added an RBI groundout.
- The Maroon and White came up with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to widen their lead to 14-8. Senior second baseman Henry Butterfield III highlighted the frame with a two-out, two-run double to left field. Freshman catcher Mike Bukowski added an RBI single and freshman center fielder Cael Magill smashed an RBI double. The hosts scored their first run of the inning on an error after Kingman put down a sacrifice bunt.
- The Pride made it 14-9 with a two-out RBI single by Morgan in the top of the eighth.

For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Six different Shoremen recorded two hits and two runs in the contest (Magill, Risnychok, Sheeler, Curtin, Kingman, and Gillmer)
- Magill recorded a double and a triple.
Pitching
- Junior Anthony Sofran picked up the victory (3-0) in relief of senior starter Mike Smith. Sofran allowed three earned runs over 2.1 innings of work.
- Freshman Alex Martin picked up his first career save as he allowed just one earned run over the final 3.0 innings.

For the Pride
Hitting
- Shortstop Kyle Brex went a game-high 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
- Oliver drove in a game-high three runs.
- Toby Hallman dropped to 0-2 despite allowing no earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief.

How It Happened
-The visitors jumped on starter Joe Morrissey as the freshman struggled for the first time in his career. Oliver produced a two-run single to left field, first baseman Bryce Fremgen drew an RBI walk, and then Oliver scored on a wild pitch.
-The Shoremen got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Curtin produced an RBI sac fly to score Magill (infield single).
- Washington took the lead with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. Magill smoked a two-run double to right center, senior right fielder Chris Baker recorded an RBI groundout, and Sheeler doubled in a run with a blast off the center field fence.
- The visitors, however, hung five runs of their own in the top of the fourth to grab an 9-5 advantage. Boccio (single) and designated hitter Justin Costanzo (Sac Fly) recorded RBI's.
- Kingman cut the deficit to 9-6 with a clean RBI single to left in the bottom of the fifth.
- The pride answered with a pair of runs to grab a 11-6 advantage in the top of the sixth. McParland drove in a run after reaching on an error and Brex added a fielder's choice RBI.
- Washington closed to within 11-10 in the bottom of the sixth as Sheeler highlighted the four-run frame with a two-run homer run to right center, his third of the season. Freshman catcher Kyle Avelino recorded an RBI double in his first career at bat and Magill added an RBI single.
- The Pride expanded their lead to 14-10 with three runs in the top of the eighth. Brex walked with the bases loaded and Morgan recorded a two-run single.
- The Shoremen responded with three of their own to close to 14-13 after eight frames. Curtin produced an RBI groundout and Kingman added a two-out, two-run double to right. The Shoremen had two more runners on but Gillmer lined to first to end the inning.
- Washington went down 1-2-3 in the ninth as closer Joey Norton fanned two batters.

For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Sheeler enjoyed a monster game with a 5-for-5 (3 RBI, HR, 2B, 3 runs) performance.
- Magill scored a career-high four runs and went 4-for-6 with three RBI.
- Kingman finished 2-for-5 (2B) with 3 RBI.
Pitching
- Morrissey, who had allowed just two earned runs in his first five starts, yielded four earned runs over 3.0 innings to suffer the loss (4-1). He allowed three hits and walked seven batters while fanning five.

For the Pride
Hitting
- Brex, Morgan, and Oliver all drove in two runs.
- Fremgen drew four walks.
Pitching
- Aiden O'Brien (2-0) picked up the win in relief despite allowing five earned runs in 4.0 innings.

Notes
- Sheeler is 13-for-20 over the last five games and now leads the club with a .405 batting mark. He also paces the team with 23 RBI and a .635 slugging percentage.
- Magill scored six times in the doubleader and leads the team with 29 runs scored.
