Box Score Chestertown, Md. – Franklin & Marshall shortstop Bobby Falese went 3-for-4 and hit a pair of homers to lead the visiting Diplomats to a, 7-4, Centennial Conference victory against the host Washington College Shoremen on Tuesday afternoon at Athey Park. The Shoremen fall to 18-12 (4-5 Centennial Conference) while the visitors improve to 18-12 (9-2 C.C.). Sophomore first baseman Danny Sheeler drove in a team-high two runs for the Shoremen.
How It Happened
- The Shoremen got on the board first as Sheeler scored senior right fielder Chris Baker (lead-off 2B) with a one-out single to left center field.
- F&M went ahead for good as they put a pair of unearned runs on the board in the top of the third inning off freshman starter Joe Morrissey. With runners on second and third, third baseman Joe Curtin tried to nab Benson at the plate but his throw was wild, allowing Benson to score the first run. Third baseman Tommy Denlinger then came around to score on a throwing error by Morrissey on the same play.
- The visitors added another run in the top of the fourth as left fielder Drew Butera lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to right field after right fielder Patrick Elliott tripled to center.
- The Diplomats widened their lead to 5-1 in the fifth as Falese hit the first of his homers, a two-run shot to right field.
- F&M added an unearned run in the sixth as Denlinger scored on a throwing error by freshman catcher Mike Bukowski.
- The Shoremen cut the deficit to 6-2 in the bottom of the frame as freshman second baseman Erik Risnychok singled up the middle to plate Curtin, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
- Washington closed to within 6-3 in the seventh as Sheeler delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to score Baker (single).
- The Shoremen made it 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth and threatened for more but were turned away from a big inning. Senior shortstop CJ Gillmer recorded an RBI single to account for the run. Washington loaded the bases but Sheeler struck out after a long at bat to end the threat.
- Falese homered again in the ninth to account for the final run of the contest.
