Box Score 2 SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Washington College baseball team lost both games of their Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field. The Shoremen fell 11-8 in the opener and were edged in the nightcap, 7-6 in 11 innings. The Shoremen fall to 14-9 (0-2) while the Garnet improved to 10-13 (2-0).
Game 1, Swarthmore 11, Washington College 8
- The Shoremen took a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second as freshman second baseman Erik Risnychok singled to right field to score senior left fielder Max Ruvo.
- Max Ruvo and senior third baseman Joe Curtin produced RBI singles in the third to spot the visitors a 3-0 lead.
- The hosts scored five runs in the bottom of the third off senior lefty starter Mike Smith. Second baseman Nate Jbara had the big hits as he smoked a three-run double to left center.
- Washington scored four times in the top of the eighth to go ahead by a score of 7-5. Curtin recorded and RBI single, senior shortstop CJ Gillmer drew an RBI walk, and freshman pinch hitter Noah Iseman came through with a two-run single through the right side.
- Swarthmore went ahead for good with six runs on three hits and four walks in the bottom of the eighth inning. First baseman Matthew Silvestre had the game-winning hit as he singled in two runs to put the hosts up 9-7. The Garnet scored two more insurance runs on a steal of home and a wild pitch.
- The Shoremen scored their final run of the game on an RBI sac fly by Curtin.
For the Shoremen
Hitting
-Curtin went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs.
-Sheeler scored twice and recorded a double.
Pitching
- Smith allowed four earned runs in 4.0 innings and received a no-decision.
- Senior Alex Bendzlowicz took the loss (0-2) as he allowed three earned runs and retired just one batter in relief.
- Junior Anthony Sofran followed Smith and pitched three scoreless innings of relief.
For the Garnet
Hitting
- Third baseman Luke Mutz went 3-for-3 (2 walks) and scored a pair of runs.
- Silvestre drove in three runs and finished 1-for-3 with two walks.
- Jbara drove in three runs.
Pitching
- Casey Jordan picked up the win as he retired the only batter he faced.
- Rohan Cherukuri picked up his second save as he yielded a run in the ninth.
Game Two: Washington College 3, Dickinson 1
How It Happened
- Right fielder Paul Cooke hit a two-run homer to right off freshman starter Joe Morrissey in the bottom of the second for the game's first runs.
- Catcher Andrew Olsen made it 3-0 with a dinger to left in the fifth.
- The visitors scored two runs in the sixth to close within 3-2. Hoffman singled up the middle to bring in freshman center fielder Cael Magill (single) and Curtin had an RBI single to score Sheeler (fielder's choice).
- The Shoremen got even in the seventh as pinch-hitter Iseman came through with an RBI single through the right side to plate Risnychok (walk).
- Washington went ahead 4-3 in the eighth as senior designated hitter Jack Kingman singled to center to plate Hoffman (walk).
- The hosts tied the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the frame on a two-out double down the left field line by designated hitter Michael Sepe.
- The Shoremen scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to grab a 6-4 advantage. Sheeler produced an RBI single through the left side and Hoffman followed with an RBI single through the left side.
- The Red Devils forced extra innings with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Left fielder Austin Burgess recorded a one-out RBI single and Silvestre evened the game with an RBI sacrifice fly.
- Swarthmore scored the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th as center fielder Kirk Tereda-Herzer scored on a two-out error by freshman catcher Nick Miller. Tereda-Herzer drew a lead-off walk from reliever Izaiah Santiago, advanced to second on a single, and reached third on a wild pitch.
For the Shorewomen
Hitting
-Curtin went 3-for-6 with an RBI.
-Hoffman drove in a team-high two runs and finished 2-for-3.
-Kingman, Sheeler, and Magill all recorded a pair of hits.
Pitching
- Morrissey allowed four earned runs on five hits over 7.1 innings of work. He fanned 10 and walked a pair.
- Santiago took the loss (0-2) after allowing a run in 0.2 innings.
For the Garnet

-Right fielder Paul Cooke went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI
-Mutz went 2-or-5 with two runs scored.
Pitching
-Jeremy Jensen got the win (1-0) as he went 1.2 innings without allowing a run.
