Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Washington College baseball team dropped a 17-10 decision to the Haverford Fords, in a Centennial Conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Athey Park. The Shoremen fall to 0-3 in the conference and 14-10 overall while the visitors improve to 11-11 (2-1).
How It Happened
- The Shoremen got off to a fantastic start as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first to strike first. Senior designated hitter Jack Kingman doubled to right center with two outs to score senior right fielder Max Ruvo (hit by pitch) and freshman center fielder Cael Magill (single).
- Washington widened their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third when freshman first baseman Noah Iseman launched a grand slam to right center, his first career homer.
-Haverford would then plate 12 unanswered runs to take control of the game. The visitors scored a single run in the fourth on a homer by designated hitter Zach Crampton and then put up four runs in the top of the fifth. Second baseman Harry Genth recorded a two-run single to highlight the frame.
- The visitors took the lead for good with four more in the top of the sixth inning. Right fielder Daniel Rosman had the big hit as he doubled to left field to bring in two runs.
- The Fords grabbed an 11-6 advantage in the top of the seventh as Crampton drew a bases loaded walk and shortstop Zach Becker would later score on a wild pitch.
- Left fielder Luke Smith doubled down the left field line to make it 12-6 in the eighth.
- The Shoremen scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it interesting. Sophomore Pinch hitter Logan Yi had an RBI single, freshman pinch hitter Erik Risnychock recorded a two-run single, and senior second baseman Henry Butterfield III added an RBI single.
- Haverford put the game away with five runs on three hits in the ninth. Genth and Smith produced two-run doubles and catcher Anthony Runfola added an RBI single.
For the Shoremen
Hitting
- Senior shortstop CJ Gillmer was the lone Shoreman to have multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Magill drew three walks and finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.
- Iseman was 1-for-3 (HR, 4 RBI, walk, 2 runs scored)
- Kingman finished 1-for-5 (2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs)
Pitching
-Sophomore Izaiah Santiago started and allowed an earned run over 3.0 innings of work. He walked five and struck out a pair.
-Freshman Alex Martin (0-1) took the loss as he allowed three earned runs on four hits in 1.0 innings of work.
For the Fords
Hitting
-Smith went 3-for-5 (2 2B) and drove in three runs.
-Genth was 2-for-6 (2B) with a team-high for RBI.
-Becker scored three runs and finished 2-for-5 with a pair of walks.
-Crampton was 2-for-4 (HR, 2 RBI) with two walks.
Pitching
-August Williams (3-1) picked up the win in relief as he allowed four earned runs, walked four and fanned seven over 3.1 innings.
-Riley Grohowski picked up his second save after failing to yield a run in 1.1 innings of work.
Notes
-The game featured a combined 22 walks and six batters were hit by pitches.
