CARLISLE, PA - Visiting Washington College swept a
Centennial Conference doubleheader from host Dickinson College on
Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field. The Shoremen are now 14-12
overall and 9-7 in the conference with the two wins, while the Red
Devils drop to 6-23 and 3-13 respectively.
In the opener, the Shoremen grabbed a 1-0 lead in
the top of the third when senior Matt Boucher (Alexandria,
VA/Bishop Ireton) knocked in freshman Sean Connole
(Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) on a sacrifice fly. The
Red Devils tied it in the bottom half of the frame when
Andrew Sterling drove in Mike
Schuster on a triple.
Both teams scored a run each in the fourth inning.
WC sophomore Ben Jardot (McLean, VA/Flint Hill
School) chased in freshman Ryan Mulhearn
(Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) to give the visitors a 2-1
lead in the top half. Ben Sciambi scored on a
double by Matt Tuneski in the bottom half of the
inning to even the score at 2-2.
The Shoremen scored in the top of the fifth when
sophomore John Rolewicz (Bear, DE/Salesianum)
scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel, NJ/Lenape) to give WC a 3-2 edge.
Freshman Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown
South) scored on a bases loaded walk by Boucher to give
the Shoremen a 4-2 cushion. Sciambi drove in Tyler
Rosa on a single down the right field line to cut it to
4-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
For Washington in game one, Boucher was 1-for-1
with two RBI and two walks to spearhead the Shoremen attack. On the
mound, senior hurler Chris Smith (Catonsville,
MD/Catonsville) tossed six innings to get the win and
improves to 4-2. He scattered eight hits, walked zero and struck
out in the game. Senior pitcher Chris Keiper (Toms River,
NJ/Monsignor Donovan) retired the side in order in the
seventh for his fifth save of the year.
Sciambi went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored for
the Red Devils in the opener, while Schuster went 2-for-4 with a
run scored. On the mound, Evan Fitzpatrick took
the loss and falls to 2-6.
In game two, Washington snapped a scoreless tie
with three runs in the top of the fifth to grab a 3-0 lead. Connole
singled through the right side to score Cotterell to put WC up 1-0.
Rolewicz increased the lead to 2-0 when he drove in senior
Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) on a base
hit. Connole scored when the Red Devils tagged out Rolewicz in a
run down for the final run of the frame. Dickinson got one back in
the bottom half of the fifth when Tuneski scored on a fielder's
choice.
The Shoremen increased their lead to 5-1 in the top
of the seventh. Boucher drove in Connole on an RBI single and
Rolewicz scored on a Normoyle hit. The Red Devils cut it to 5-2 in
the bottom of the seventh when Tuneski scored on a hit by
Matt Vidal.
WC added a run in the top of the eighth when
Cotterell scored on a fielder's choice to push the bulge to 6-2.
Dickinson scored twice in the eighth on a two-run single by Evan
Hennessy with two outs. The Red Devils tallied a two out single by
Sterling to send the tying run to the dish, but Keiper struck out
Garrett Horan to end the game and procure the
sweep for the Shoremen.
Connole and Rolewicz went 3-for-5 in the second
with Connole scoring twice. Cotterell scored twice and Normoyle
pounded out two hits. On the mound, sophomore Shane Mattingly (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) got the win and
improves to 5-1 on the year. He went seven innings, scattering six
hits and allowed just two runs. Keiper pitched the ninth and
recorded his sixth save of the season and second of the day.
Hennessy went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Red
Devils and Tuneski was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. On the mound,
Horan took the loss and falls to 1-5.
The Shoremen will travel to in-state rival St.
Mary's on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game.
