Box Score Normoyle Goes Deep for
Washington
BALTIMORE, MD - Mike Waterhouse
went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored as third-seeded
Swarthmore topped fourth-seeded Washington College, 5-1, in the
first game of day two of the 2010 Centennial Conference Baseball
Tournament this morning at JHU Baseball Field on the campus of
Johns Hopkins. The Garnet are now 20-17 overall, while the Shoremen
finish the season at 17-15 with the loss.
Swarthmore will play the loser of top seed and top
ranked Johns Hopkins and two seed Haverford at 4:00 p.m. Hopkins
will play Haverford at 12:30 p.m.
Swarthmore in the bottom of the first put runners
on second and third with two outs, but a diving play by freshman
Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) at
second base denied Jimmy Gill of an RBI hit and
keep the game scoreless.
The Shoremen got on the board in the top of the
second when sophomore Ryan Normoyle (Mount Laurel,
NJ/Lenape) launched his fourth home run of the season down
the right field line to leadoff the frame and put WC up 1-0.
In the bottom of the second Swarthmore scored three
times to take a 3-1 lead, Mike Waterhouse singled
to right-center that scored Michael Cameron and
Tom Nakamura to put the Garnet up 2-1.
Rory McTear hit a sacrifice fly that scored
Ben Schneiderman to extend the lead to 3-1 after
two.
Spencer Ross was the first batter
in the bottom of the third and hit a solo home run just over the
left field wall to put the Garnet up 4-1. Washington had runners on
first and second in the top of the fourth with one away, but could
not cash in.
The Shoremen had the tying run at the plate in the
top of the fifth and senior Matt Boucher (Alexandria,
VA/Bishop Ireton) hit a fly ball deep to right, but Gill
caught it at the wall to prevent a potential game-tying homer.
Swarthmore added a run in the bottom of the sixth
on a single by Anthony Montalbano that knocked in
Waterhouse, who had doubled to make it 5-1 and provide the final
margin.
Swarthmore's Kyle Crawford got the
win on the mound and improves to 3-4 on the year. He went the
distance,allowing just six hits and striking out three. Ross went
2-for-4 with a home run in the Garnet's victory.
For Washington, senior pitcher Chris Smith
(Catonsville, MD/Catonsville) took the loss and finishes
the year at 4-3. He went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs,
but only three of them earned. He was relieved by fellow classmate,
pitcher Chris Keiper (Toms River, NJ/Monsignor
Donovan) who allowed just two hits and fanned three.
Boucher, Keiper, Smith and senior Brian Kramer (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) concluded their Shoremen
careers this morning.
