Box Score 2 Squad Scores 38 Runs In DH Sweep
AUBURNDALE, FL – The Washington College baseball team scored 38 runs in a doubleheader with Becker College en route to a twinbill sweep at Lake Myrtle Field #3 on Sunday at the RussMatt Central Florida Baseball Invitational. The Shoremen downed the Hawks, 16-7, in the first game and 22-1 in game two. The Shoremen are now 4-4 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 2-4.
The 38 runs in a doubleheader are the most since Washington swept Lincoln University, 17-1 and 21-0, on March 30, 1995.
In the first game, Washington scored twice in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep (NJ) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) for the game's first run. The Shoremen made it 2-0 when sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) chased home junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) on another sacrifice fly.
The Hawks responded with a run in the last of the inning when Todd Tompkins scored on an error by Washington to cut the lead to 2-1 with two outs.
Matthews drove in Baquer for the second time in the game with a RBI double to left with two away to make it 3-1 in the top of the third. After Matthews stole third, he came around to score on a Thomas RBI single through the left to make it 4-1.
Becker scored four times in the last of the third to take a 5-4 lead. Tompkins hit a two-run single that scored Eric Lajoie and Mike Smith to trim the lead to 4-3. Tompkins would come around to score on a Tony D'Addio run scoring hit to tie the game at 4-4 as the Hawks had the first five batters reach. D'Addio scored during a run-down of teammate Tom Natoli to take a 5-4 lead.
The Shoremen tied it at 5-5 in the top of the fourth when freshman Pete Breslauer (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) singled to left to score fellow classmate Brian Quadrino (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown East) with one out.
Washington exploded for eight runs in the top of the fifth to take a 13-5 lead and sent 12 men to the plate. Senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) scored on a wild pitch to snap the tie and put WC up 6-5. Quadrino chased home junior Pat Kinsella (Guilford, CT/Guilford) on a single to left to make it 7-5 and Quadrino scored on a two-bagger off the bat of freshman Garrett Richardello (Coventry, CT/East Catholic) to give WC a three-run lead at 8-5. Baquer scored Richardello on a single to make it 9-5 and Breslauer scored on a Marinelli double to increase the lead to 10-5. Baquer scored on a sacrifice fly by Matthews to lead by six runs at 11-5 and a double by Thomas drove home Marinelli to make it 12-5. The outburst was capped by a Cotterell single that scored Thomas.
The Hawks responded with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 13-7 in their turn to the plate in the fifth inning. Washington got three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-7 lead and that provided the final margin.
Baquer led the way for Washington with a 3-for-5, three run performance from the leadoff spot. Matthews and Thomas both had three RBI and Marinelli scored three times. Breslauer, Cotterell, Kinsella and Quadrino all had two hits as the Shoremen churned out 16 hits. On the mound, senior pitcher Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) got the win and is 1-0 and got his first career win. He lasted five innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs, but only three of them earned. He struck out three. Sophomore pitcher Sean Baldwin (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) tossed two innings of scoreless and hitless relief, fanning four.
Becker got a 2-for-4, three run and two RBI effort from Tompkins and D'Addio went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Mike Marcello went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Hawks had eight hits. On the hill, Nick Lemay went 4 1/3 innings and took the loss. He drops to 0-1.
In game two, the Shoremen took a quick lead in the bottom of the first with a seven-run explosion to take a 7-0 lead. Connole scored on a bases loaded walk to Matthews for the game's first run. Thomas then doubled home Marinelli and Baquer to increase the lead to 3-0. Cotterell singled to right to score Matthews and make it 4-0. Sophomore Kyle Mikula (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) smacked a two-run triple to right-center to drove in Thomas and Cotterell to make it 6-0 and he would score on a sacrifice fly by Richardello to close out the seven-run inning.
Becker scored in the top of the second when Josh Lawrence plated D'Addio on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 7-1.
Washington busted the second game open with 13 runs in the last of the third where they sent 18 batters to the plate to take a 20-1 lead. The Shoremen tacked on two more unearned runs in the last of the sixth to provide the final margin at 22-1.
Mikula sparked the offense in game two with a 3-for-4, four RBI and two run performance. Thomas was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored and senior Joe Willis (Mullica Hill, NJ/Kingsway Regional) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs. Matthews and Richardello had two runs and two RBI each, Cotterell scored twice and Marinelli drove in two runs. Washington had 16 hits in the second game. On the mound, senior Joe Kearney-Argow (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) got the win and is 1-0. He went the first four innings and gave up seven hits and one run while striking out three. The bullpen allowed just one hit in the final three innings.
Dylan Kost took the loss for Becker and falls to 0-1.
Washington is off until Tuesday morning when they play St. Norbert at 10:30 am in Leesburg, Florida.
