Kearney-Argow Records 100th Career Strikeout In Game Two

GETTYSBURG, PA – Host Gettysburg took both ends of a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader from visiting Washington at Kirchoff Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Bullets won game one, 7-2, and took game two, 4-3, in 10 innings.  The Bullets are now 18-10 overall and 5-4 in the conference, while the Shoremen fall to 12-17 and 3-6 respectively.

In game one, Nate Simon scored the game's first run on a fielder's choice to put Gettysburg ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

In the last of the third, the Bullets scored four times to take a 5-0 lead.  Pat Cody doubled down the right field line to score Al Posch with nobody out to make it 2-0 with nobody out.  The next hitter, Simon doubled to right-center to score Tommy LeNoir and Cody to make it 4-0.  Simon scored on a fielder's choice to cap the scoring in the third and the Bullets led by five.

Washington got two in the top of the sixth to trim it to 5-2.  Senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic) scored on a fielding error to cut the lead to 5-1 and junior Nick Marinelli (Ellicott City, MD/Marriotts Ridge) scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to three runs.

Gettysburg responded with two runs in its half of the sixth inning to provide the final margin in the opener.  Cam MacDonald scored on a sacrifice fly by Posch to make it 6-2 and with one out Austin Davis scored on an infield single by LeNoir for the final margin.

For Gettysburg, which had 10 hits in the game, LeNoir had a game-high three hits, while Simon had two hits and two RBI.  Ben Roessle had two hits for the Bullets.  On the hill, Ryan Taylor tossed a complete game seven-hitter as he gave up a pair of unearned runs.  He struck out seven, while walking zero.  He improves to 4-2.

For Washington, Marinelli and sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep) had two hits each with the team recording seven total.  On the mound, senior pitcher Kyle Aldrich (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills Regional) took the loss and drops to 3-3 on the year.

In game two, Gettysburg got onto the board in the bottom of the second inning when Patrick O'Grady plated Simon with one out.  In the bottom of the fifth, the hosts tacked on two runs to grab a 3-0 lead.  With one out, O'Grady scored on a two-base hit to right-center to make it 2-0 by MacDonald and he would score on a Posch sacrifice fly to center to give the Bullets a three-run lead.

The Shoremen got onto the board with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to cut the Gettysburg lead to 3-2.  Sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) scored on an error with nobody out to make it 3-1 and senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) scored on a sacrifice fly sophomore Kyle Mikula (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) to trim the lead to 3-2.

Washington tied it in the top of the eighth with one out when Connole scored on a single through the right side by freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourne Park) at 3-3.  Washington loaded the bases with one out, but back to back strikeouts ended the threat.

In the last of the 10th, Gettysburg loaded the bases with nobody out and won the game when Simon plated Posch on a single up the middle for the game-winning run and gave the Bullets a sweep.

LeNoir, MacDonald and Simon all had two hits for the Bullets which had 10 hits in the game.  On the mound, Brett Harrington got the win in relief and improves to 1-0 as he tossed the 10th inning.

For the Shoremen, Connole and Thomas both had three hits each, while Marinelli had two as the team had nine hits.  Pitching wise, freshman Dan Jarrell (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) took the loss and drops to 3-2 as he tossed the last two-plus innings.  Senior pitcher Joe Kearney-Argow (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), who went the first seven innings recorded his 100th career strikeout in the bottom of the sixth when he fanned Roessle swinging for the second out.  He is the 18th Washington pitcher to record 100 or more strikeouts and he sits at exactly 100.

The Shoremen return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. against visiting Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action.
