WC Records 11 Hits In Ballgame

CHESTERTOWN, MD - #3 Johns Hopkins got a 3-for-5 with three RBI performance from Jeff Lynch as the visiting Blue Jays downed host Washington College, 8-2, on Friday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in Centennial Conference baseball action in the Shoremen's home finale.  The Blue Jays improve to 31-5 overall and 13-3 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen slide to 14-23 and 5-11 respectively.

The Blue Jays took the lead for good with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning.  With two outs, Chris Wilhelm scored on due to a throwing error by Washington to take a 1-0 lead and Anthony Weiner came home on a base hit to left by Raul Shah to put the Blue Jays ahead 2-0.

The Shoremen got onto the board in the last of the fourth when freshman Bryan Baquer (Woodbridge, VA/Osbourn Park) scored on an RBI groundout to third base off the bat of sophomore Scott Matthews (Goshen, NY/Don Bosco Prep) to trim the Blue Jays' lead to 2-1.

Johns Hopkins scored twice in the top of the fifth when with two outs, Lynch doubled to center to chase home Christopher Casey and Ryan Zakszeski to give the guests a 4-1 lead.

The Blue Jays scored four times in the top of the eighth to make it 8-1 and the Shoremen scored in the bottom of the ninth to cut it to 8-2 and provide the final margin.

In addition to Lynch, Zakszeski was 3-for-5 with two runs scored for Johns Hopkins as the guests had 15 hits in the game.  Wilhelm, Shah and Jonathan Hettleman had two hits each, while Casey and Weiner each scored twice.  On the mound, Carter Burns got the win and is now 6-0 as he gave up just one run in seven innings and striking out five.

For the Shoremen, senior Sean Connole (Mt. Airy, MD/St. John's Catholic), senior Tyler Cotterell (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and sophomore Dennis Thomas (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) all had two hits as the hosts totaled 11 in the game.  On the mound, senior pitcher Joe Kearney-Argow (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) took the loss and drops to 2-3.  He allowed five runs, three earned, in seven innings.  The senior struck out two and walked one.

The Shoremen committed three errors in the game and the Blue Jays scored four unearned runs.  The Blue Jays did not commit an error.

Washington concludes its 2013 season tomorrow afternoon in a Centennial Conference doubleheader at Dickinson beginning at 12:30 p.m.
