Davenport was appointed Washington's sixth women's rowing head coach in the summer of 1990 and held that position until his retirement in July 2016. A collegiate coach for three decades, Davenport oversaw Washington's men's and women's rowing teams at the completion of his coaching career and also served as Washington's compliance coordinator and as an adjunct professor.

The Shorewomen captured six Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships under Davenport, in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. He was named the conference's Coach of the Year in 2013 after securing the league's first-ever automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championships. It marked the first time in team history that the Shorewomen had earned a full team berth to the NCAA Championships. Washington finished sixth at the Championships, headlined by a fifth-place finish in the first varsity eight. The Boston, Massachusetts native was subsequently named the College Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Coach of the Year for Division III for the first time.

The Shorewomen went on to win their second, third, and fourth consecutive MARC Championships in 2014, 2015, and 2016, advance to the NCAA Division III Championships each year. Davenport was named MARC Coach of the Year for the second time in 2015 and for the third time in 2016.

After several years of having the top-ranked team and/or boat in the Mid-Atlantic region, Davenport guided the Shorewomen's varsity eight to the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships in 2008. He was also named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year that same season.

The Shorewomen returned to the NCAA Division III Championships the following year as the first varsity eight was again selected as an at-large boat.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Dr. Mike Davenport into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 28th day of October, 2022.
