Michelle Rodney was the first Washington College softball player to earn All-Centennial Conference status all four years, garnering second-team honors in 1999, honorable mention in 2000, second-team honors again in 2001, and first-team recognition in 2002.
Michelle, who played catcher, center field, and shortstop at Washington College, made an immediate impact as a freshman in 1999, hitting .422, slugging .647 and totaling 33 runs and 26 RBI, both of which tied single-season school records. She also stole 12 bases and hit four home runs.
In 2000, Michelle hit .340, slugged .500, and hit five triples, which tied for the Centennial Conference lead and tied the school’s single-season record – a record which has yet to be broken. In 2001, Michelle led the Centennial Conference with six home runs, hit .349, slugged .569, scored 25 runs, and drove in 22 runs.
As a senior in 2002, Michelle led the Centennial Conference in hitting with a .432 batting average, slugged .514, and swiped a conference-best 15 stolen bases.
Michelle still holds the school career record for stolen bases with 44. Her 10 career home runs and 89 career runs scored were both school records when she graduated. She hit .383 for her career with a .562 slugging percentage. In 379 career at bats, she struck out just 29 times. She also earned All-ECAC and All-Region honors and was a two-time Team Most Valuable Player and a team captain.
Following graduation, Michelle spent one year as an assistant coach for the Shorewomen. She has also coached for various high school and youth leagues in the area.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Michelle Rodney into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
