Miro Beran was one of the standout performers during the men’s tennis team’s historic four-year run in the mid 1990s. As a freshman in 1994, Miro helped the Shoremen win the College’s first-ever NCAA Division III National Championship. Three years later, the Shoremen again won the national title, making Miro and three of his classmates the only four student-athletes in the College’s history to play for two national championship teams.
Individually, Miro was equally impressive. He qualified for the NCAA Division III Singles Championship Tournament four years in a row, breaking through to the quarterfinals to earn All-America Singles recognition as a senior. In the fall of his senior year, Miro won the Rolex Regional Singles Championship and teamed with Michael Kember to win the Rolex Regional Doubles Championship. Miro and Michael went on to place third at the Rolex National Collegiate Championships.
Miro won the Centennial Conference Singles Championship in 1994 and again in 1995 and won the conference’s doubles championship in 1996. He earned All-Centennial Conference honors in singles all four years and All-Centennial Conference honors in doubles as a senior.
In Miro’s four years on the team, the Shoremen won four Centennial Conference Championships and piled up a 72-9 dual-match record. Of those nine losses, only three came against Division III opponents and two of those were in the NCAA Division III Tournament. In addition to winning the National Championship in 1994 and 1997, the Shoremen were runners up in 1995 and advanced to the second round of the tournament in 1996.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Miro Beran into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
