“Woman of the Year.” That title is as impressive as it sounds.  The NCAA says that its Woman of the Year program recognizes not only the athletics achievements of outstanding young women, but also their academic achievements, community service and leadership. Toby Wilmet was named Maryland’s Woman of the Year for 2001 – selected among nominees from schools from all three divisions of the NCAA – and was chosen as a finalist for the National Woman of the Year Award.  Such distinctions for Toby were certainly justified.

Toby has a firm hold on the title of best field hockey goalkeeper in school history. She was a 1999 All-America first team selection. She was named All-Region three times – twice to the first team and once to the second team. She was also a four-time All-Centennial Conference selection, earning two spots on the first team, one on the second team, and one as an honorable mention. A 2000 North/South Senior All-Star, she holds the school records for both shutouts in a career with 22 and in a season with eight. Her 522 career saves rank her second in school history. Over the course of her career, she posted a .864 save percentage and a 1.38 goals-against average.

Toby helped lead the Shorewomen to great heights as the team went 53-21 over her four-year career. The Shorewomen won a share of the 1997 Centennial Conference Championship and played in the NCAA Division III Tournament that year.  They also qualified for the 1999 ECAC Tournament and for the first-ever Centennial Conference Tournament in 2000.

Also an outstanding catcher, Toby spent three seasons on the Shorewomen softball team, earning All-Centennial Conference honorable mention in 2001. She hit .292 with 38 runs scored and 39 RBI in her career and threw out 15 would-be base stealers – the second-highest total in team history.

Toby was honored with the Senior Athletic Award in 2001 as the school’s top senior female athlete.  She was also the 2000 winner of the Elizabeth “Bo” Blanchard Memorial Sportsmanship Award and was named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She was a member of both Omicron Delta Kappa and the Society of Junior Fellows.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Toby Wilmet into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 13th day of October, 2012.
