    M. Basketball, Track & Field, President

Among those who devoted their professional lives to this institution, Dr. Joe McLain’s name is at the top of the list.

An outstanding scholar and student government leader, he participated in many extracurricular activities, including varsity basketball and track and field. As a professor of chemistry and dean of the college, he was an avid sports enthusiast, appreciating the integration between the life of the mind and athletics that occurs at the best liberal arts colleges. In his role as President, he validated the importance of the student-athlete by helping the Athletic Council establish the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame. We are here tonight because of his vision and guidance.

In whatever role he played — student, professor, chair of the Chemistry Department, Athletic Council member, Dean and President of the College — Joe McLain demonstrated an infectious enthusiasm for all aspects of the athletics program. He and his wife, Anne, befriended hundreds of athletes over the years and attended countless athletic contests, both home and away.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Dr. Joseph McLain into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame on this second day of October, 2004.
