Howard Hale (“Yank”) Neubert, from Waterbury, Connecticut and Crosby High School, was an All-Maryland performer in football and basketball.
He was a first-class end–a fine pass receiver, a solid blocker and a resourceful defender. He was the first substitute at that position as a freshman, became a regular as a sophomore, and played both end positions at different times during his final two seasons. Howard Neubert was first team All-Maryland in his senior year of 1939.
In basketball, he was elusive with an excellent repertoire of shots, and was a formidable defensive player for that time at 6’2”,185 pounds. He possessed a deadly two-handed overhead shot, and was known for his unorthodox shots from the corner and his fakes. He was best-known for the great in-bounds play where he would leap, take the ball and shoot–all in one motion.
Neubert earned second team All-Maryland honors as a junior in 1938-39.
As a senior, he was the second leading scorer in the state, and was named to the first team All-Maryland.
He also was a respected campus leader. He served as president of both the Varsity Club and the Athletic Association in his senior year.
He died in 1982.
