Had Maggy Kilroy Burgess only played lacrosse at Washington College, she would have had an outstanding athletic career. Instead, she also played basketball, becoming one of the finest two-sport female athletes in the College’s history.
Maggy’s lacrosse career for the Shorewomen coincided with their rise to prominence. During her freshman season, the Shorewomen finished 5-12. During her senior year, they went 14-3, finishing second in the Centennial Conference, qualifying for the ECAC Tournament, and earning a national ranking as high as 12th in Division III.
A four-time All-Centennial Conference selection in lacrosse, Maggy also twice earned Regional All-America second-team honors. An attacker equally adept at scoring and distributing, she finished her career with 154 goals and a then school-record 106 assists for a then school-record 260 total points. She capped off her career by scoring 57 goals and assisting on 27 others during the Shorewomen’s historic 2000 season.
In basketball, Maggy was the team’s starting point guard, dishing out 362 career assists, which was a school record at the time of her graduation. Her 122 assists during the 1998-99 season were a single-season school record at the time. Her 196 career steals still stand as the school’s career record. With Maggy running the point, the Shorewomen hoopsters enjoyed three winning seasons in four years, including an appearance in the 1999 Centennial Conference Tournament.
At the conclusion of her senior year, Maggy was one of the recipients of the College’s Senior Athletic Award.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Maggy Kilroy Burgess into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 18th day of October, 2014.
