Mike Cordrey enjoyed an outstanding four-year career as a scoring midfielder and face-off man for the Washington College men’s lacrosse team in the 1970s.
Mike’s skill as a face-off man helped the Shoremen dominate possession against their opponents, kick-starting a high-scoring offense. A formidable goal scorer in his own right, Mike found the back of the net over 80 times during his four-year career, the bulk of those coming during his final three seasons.
As both a junior and a senior, Mike received national recognition, landing on the All-America second team two years in a row. He also served as a team captain as a senior.
Mike’s excellent play came during a time when men’s lacrosse was transitioning into an NCAA sponsored sport. During his freshman and sophomore campaigns, the Shoremen advanced to the championship game of the USILA College Division National Tournament, held as a precursor to the NCAA Tournament. During his junior season, the Shoremen advanced to the NCAA Division II/III Quarterfinals and, as a senior, Mike helped lead them to the NCAA Division II/III Semifinals. In the team’s two games in the 1975 national tournament, Cordrey racked up a total of eight points. All told, the Shoremen won 43 games and lost just 22 during his four-year career.
Mike also played one year of soccer at the College, helping the 1972 team finish with an impressive record of 11-3.
Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Matthew Michael Cordrey into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 1st day of October, 2016.
