Washington College

Lloyd H. “Pins” Pearson attended Washington College from 1915 through 1919. He was a member of the 1915 basketball team, the first to play in the newly constructed Cain Gymnasium which was located on the site now occupied by the Miller Library. Pearson’s coaches during that era included F. Stanley Porter, Coach Tom Kibler and Homer Smoot, all members of the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Although an outstanding catcher for four years on the baseball team and a running back on the football team for one year, he was most noted for his basketball accomplishments. Complete statistics are not available, but newspaper accounts verify that not only was he the team’s scoring leader for four years, he also was one of the scoring leaders in the state. With Pins sometimes racking up more than half of the team’s total points in a single game, Coach Kibler’s teams had an accumulative record of 28 wins and 9 losses. Although his season’s average is not known, individual game reports show that in many games he scored 20 or more points – an unusual feat for that time and era since many teams did not score that many points in one game.

In recognition for his outstanding contributions to the success of the varsity athletic programs of Washington College, Harold L. “Pins” Pearson is herewith inducted posthumously into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame on this 30th day of September, 1995.
