When one thinks of the waterfront at Washington College it’s hard to not think first of one man – John Wagner. John’s influence on the growth and development of the facility itself, of its three varsity sports, and of its numerous recreational and educational opportunities simply cannot be understated.

Given his long history of service to the waterfront, it should come as no surprise that John was a coxswain on the men’s rowing team during his days as a student at Washington College. He later went on to serve in various capacities as a rowing coach, including an eight-year stint as the head women’s coach. For most of his time at Washington College, however, John’s role has been his current one – Waterfront Director.

In that role, John has excelled and has exceeded expectations. He has built and maintained facilities and raised funds for countless boats and other items for use by the College community. He was instrumental in bringing the sailing program from club to varsity status – a move that has resulted in the Washington College sailing team annually being among the best in the nation. With NCAA Championship and IRA Championship appearances, both rowing program have risen to great heights as well with John’s influences. He has also facilitated more campus and community events at the waterfront than any of us can probably remember.

The tangible contributions John has made to both Athletics and the College as a whole have been numerous. Even more overwhelming, however, is the impact he has had in less tangible ways through his care, devotion, humility, and ingenuity. John’s induction here today is the latest in a series of honors reflecting the appreciation for all he has done for Washington College. He had a crew shell named in his honor in March 2010 and received a Distinguished Service Award from the College in February 2011.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct John A. Wagner, Jr. into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 13th day of October, 2012.
