As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of basketball at Washington College this year, it is fitting that we induct the Shoremen’s all-time leading rebounder into our Hall of Fame. Louis Young is one of 35 members of the Shoremen’s 1,000 point club, but he is the only one whose career rebounding totals trump his career scoring totals.

There is not a rebounding record on the books for Washington College men’s basketball that Lou  does not own.  His 1,133 career rebounds are more than any other player in team history.  His 1970-71 season was extraordinary as he averaged 17.1 rebounds per game (a school record) for a total of 393 rebounds on the season (another school record).  During the season he collected a record 27 rebounds in an 89-85 win against Western Maryland.

Lou also scored his share of points, finishing his career with 1,039 – 30th most in team history. He was named an All Middle-Atlantic Conference honorable mention and an All-State honorable mention in 1972 and was a Team Most Valuable Player.

Following his graduation from Washington College, Lou continued to play organized basketball into his early 30s and even had a try-out with the Baltimore Bullets.  He began coaching basketball when his sons turned five years old and that became one of his many life passions. He has also been a lawyer, a teacher, and a research analyst.

Washington College considers it an honor and privilege to induct Louis A. Young into its Athletic Hall of Fame on this 13th day of October, 2012.
